Taking inspiration from 19th Century recipes this is a traditional full bodied porter, brewed with a blend of dark malts, generously hopped with a hint of chocolate and a robust bitterness.

Can from Beer52. Pours a nice fairly thick black with creamy beige to tanned head. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee, hint of dusty spice, slight yeast. Taste is very roasty, ash like and coffee but there is just enough sweetness and hint of blackcurrant and caramel to give this a nice contrast. Slick to chewy medium body, very rounded. Excellent.

24-27/10/2023. From cask at the 45th Norwich Beer Festival. Pours clear very dark mahogany brown with a small bubbly beige head. Good looking beer. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malts, nut, dark fruits, berries, ash. Moderate sweetness, medium roasted bitterness. Medium body, oily and slightly watery, average carbonation. A little soapy to finish, otherwise good.

330ml can: BB 31st December 2023. Drank at home on 23rd April 2023, the fourth beer in a mini tasting with myself. Poured into a Gordons thistle shaped glass, it looked good, black bodied with a tanned top. Chocolate front with a weak peat backdrop that hinted at smoky fires and armchairs.

[33cl can from Beer52.] A glossy opaque black pour with a fast fading tan head; aroma of milky chocolate and a little smoke; taste like a rauchbier with smoky bacon at first, then some silky smooth chocolate; then a dry finish with lingering bacon.

(Cask at Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak, London, 25 May 2022) Black colour with creamy, beige head. Roasted malty nose with black coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt. Malty, roasted taste with notes of black coffee, chocolate, cacao, liquorice and a generous roasty bitterness. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Really tasty and well made porter. Very nice.

Can. Beer Central Sheffield. Very dark chestnut brown. Semi lacing off white froth. Nose has some blackcurrant like hoppage. Charred wood. Bitter chocolate. Light earthiness. Taste is pretty earthy and ashy. Big bitterness here. Plenty of body with fine carbonation. Dries out as it goes. Earthy ashy bitter finish.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up from Cambridge Wines. Pours clear, deep brown with a tight, creamy beige head. Light-medium sweet flavour with strong ashy roast, bitter cocoa, some burnt rubber, earthy hops.light bodied with fine carbonation and velvety texture. Finishes with notes of burnt toast, more ashy roast, charred rubber, earth. Not bad.
