Bottle split at Pig’s Ear Cellar, RMD, 29/06/13. Pours light black with a thin tan head that dissipates edgeward. Nose is light roast, tropical fruit medley, grapefruit. Taste comprises grapefruit, light bitterness, touch of cocoa, roasty tones, hop backbone and a shaving of pine. Medium bodied with fine carbonation, light roast and hop bitterness lingers on the finish. Decent enough CDA.

Nose is a malt base with some oak, with a citrus note that quickly fades. Taste is very hoppy, with a touch of roast and burnt toast in the background with resin, some pepper, orange and tangerine to the front ,with some mint in the resin in the bitter finish. Mouthfeel is light and drinkable. It’s a nice beer from a silly style.

Bottle at home in London - picked up at the one, the only, THE Kris Wines. Pours clear, red-brown with a thick, frothy beige head. Pretty classic black IPA nose, decent roast, some juicy citrus, a bit of dark berries. Light to medium sweet flavor with mellow roasted malts, lots of sweet and juicy citrus, orange and lighter grapefruit, some blackberries, mild earth. Light to medium bodied with fine, creamy carbonation. Lightly resinous to finish with touches of toasted pine, now some bits of baking cocoa, restrained roasted malts, further juicy citrus fruits and mellow berries. Overall a very nice beer. Good balance and fair depth.

500ml bottle from Beer Hawk - Never know what you are going to get from Saltaire, had some shockers, had some good ones. This is a cracker. Pitch black body, thin white head, nothing special there. Robust nose of hop-heavy citrus, grapefruit, sour tangerines, lots to enjoy and set the palate salivating. Well rounded body, good mouthfeel, with a medium bitterness that carries all the aromas through to the taste, leaving a lasting finish. Superb.

500ml bottle. Black brown colour, foamy tan head that diminishes leaving some lacing and aroma of malt, caramel & fresh citrus hop. Taste is sweetish roast malt, dark chocolate & coffee along with a tangy hoppy citrus & pine resin bitterness. Juicy mouth feel, medium bodied, medium carbonation, dry bitter finish. Quite drinkable black IPA.

Bottle from Tomlinsons, Inverness [300313]
Very dark brown, ruby light through bottom of glass, dense off white head
Aroma of citrus hops, grapefruit hop, dark roasted malts
Taste of citrus hops, soft grapefruit zest, piney hop, smooth dark quite rich roasted malts, some dark chocolate, good hop malt balance, nice stouty backbone with plently of citrus and resinous hops on top, like it that it isn’t too bitter roasted, no bitter charcoal and the hops aren’t harsh and grassy
Palate soft to medium carb, medium body, quite a smooth texture, really well balanced. Finish as main flavour, smooth, rich dark roast, moderately bitter hop and roast tail
Overall - There are many variations of Black IPA, but this is the style of BIPA I like. It’s very good! Must be great on cask

Cask at Cask Pub & Kitchen. It pours deep brown with a medium beige head. The nose is rich roasted malt, toast, coffee, pine and earth. The taste is roasted malt, coffee, earth, resin, assertive bitterness, dark fruit, peppery, toast and bitter chocolate with a dry, pretty bitter finish. Medium body, soft carbonation and chewy mouth-feel. Yeah pretty flavoursome, but I probably couldn’t drink a lot of it.
