Bottle from Beers of Europe. Poured a very dark ruby with thin, tight off white head. Peppery hop aroma with notes of cocoa and grass. Initial flavours of bitter pine, straw and a little dark fruit. Medium mouth feel with moderate carbonation. Finish was green chilli, burnt malt and bitter, dry resin. Nice to see some good offerings coming out of Wales!

330ml bottle. Clear, ruby red glowing, darkest mahogany colour with average, firm, creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white head. Dark malty aroma with a roasty touch, piney, minimally resinous hoppy overtones, a fruity touch of peach and red berries. Taste is initially bone-dry roasty dark malty, bitter and minimally fruity hoppy overtones, later additionally with accumulating, peppery chili notes. Nice dosage of chili, sadly slightly restricted in the width of hop flavours.

Aroma: coffee, chilli, some caramel. Color: dark reddish brown, almost black. Head is small and dissapears rather qucikly. Taste: chilli! chilli! Dark chocolate bitterness, also hops of course. Rather soft carbonation. Overall: well it’s really chilli, but it is interesting beer. Not something I would drink regularly, but at least it’s not boring! --- Beer merged from original tick of Barbarians' Beverage (Shapeshifter Series) on 09 Feb 2018 at 17:11. Original review text: bl

At the Portcullis, Clifton, Bristol, October 2013. Dark brown with a slight off-white head. Dark fruits, some chocolate and a vague suggestion of chilli warmth, with a touch of grassy hop and dryish finish. Good.

Keg at Craft Clerkenwell. It pours dark brown with a small tan head. The nose is charcoal, toast, roasted malt, chocolate, caramel and chilli spice. The taste is bitter-sweet, spice, chilli pepper heat, roasted malt, charcoal, toast, some astringency, mild fruitiness and some vegetal notes with a spicy, bitter finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Fine for what it is, but I wouldn’t go back for another in a rush...

Keg at Craft Beer Clerkenwell, 17/09/13. Dark mahogony brown with a light tan head, good lacing ensues. Nose is hops, light roast, hint of pine. Taste carries a mineral bite, light chilli kick, roasty malt, hoppy backbone, pine, grapefruit, spice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, with hop bitterness in the finish. Decent effort at Chilli in a CDA. There was a little burn for sure but this didn’t dominate and turn it into a joke spice/herb/veg worlds hottest beer affair!

Craft Clerkenwell. Keg courtesy of Mr Bois. Bright clear deep amber beer with a small pale tan head. Light creamy dark malt, just a tiny roast edge. Subtle dark fruits. Light chilli heat builds on the crispy and semi dry finish. It’s fine but not really floating my boat!

Keg at CBC Islington - London. Pours deep brown with a creamy tan head. Really nice stuff. Lots of rich chocolate with bold chili pepper heat. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Finishes with strong chili pepper heat, mild roast, earth, stiff dark chocolate. The pepper heat borders on excessive but it just barely doesn’t cross the line. A pretty solid chili black IPA.

Cask, handpump at The Lamb & Flag, Monday 9th September 2013 Pours black with barely any head at all. I never took a great deal of notice of the pumpclip as the bar was quite busy (St Giles Fair) however it wasn’t long before I realised that there was chilli in this, as the initial spicy bitterness subsided to be replaced by a steady building warmth. The hoppiness is always there but never too much, it is very full flavoured and tastes every bit as strong as the 6.3% abv suggests. However I didn’t get mangoes or whatever else it suggests, but I did rather like this. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov4 3.6
