9 August 2024. Tim's BBQ Extravaganza with Seba, Maria & Anke; many thanks to Tim for hosting & sharing the bottle!
Cloudy black, stable, frothy, beige head. Strong aroma of dried fig, raisin, fondant, espresso, dark fudge, toasted almond, liquorice, black tea, wood, brandy, toast. Taste has sweet fig & raisin over a thick dark-chocolatey, toasty, almondy malt body surrounded by herbal (tea) notes and bitter mocha. Earthy & herbal hoppy finish, lingering dried fruits, bittersweet fondant and warming brandy-like alcohol. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Delicious and rich but remaining fairly drinkable.

Cremiger, herb malziger Beginn mit erkennbarem Alkohol, der aber im Hintergrund bleibt. Leichte, nicht übertriebene Süße, wärmend, rund. Weicher Abgang, langer, etwas schokoladiger Abgang. Gefällt. 10/11/12/11/9/11

Superstrong ale by Kees, apparently intended as a hybrid of imperial stout and Eisbock - but oddly dubbed an 'old ale' here... Apparently a limited edition, thanks Craftmember for sharing on his birthday party. Pale greyish off-white, moussey, shred-lacing, opening head on a hazy bronze-brown robe with burgundy hue. Aroma of molasses, toffee, cognac, Belgian chocolates, beef stock, nougat, pistachio, 'speculoos', amaretto, cashew nuts, caramel sauce, hints of wet leather and moss. Dense, concentrated onset, sweet with an umami edge, hinting at candied fig, raisin, fried apple and a bit of porcini, soft in carbonation with evidently very oily, vinous yet smooth mouthfeel. Thick layers of caramel, cashew nut, almond and some chocolate build up in the middle, adorned with herbal notes of black tea and bayleaf, even some vague clove; unsurprisingly, the finish is heated by considerable brandy-like alcohol, but impressively enough, it does not harshly scorch away the flavours - instead, they are respectfully highlighted and amplified. Bittersweet but much more sweet than bitter, very boozy in a 'good' way and flavour-wise very cleverly constructed: this is not an imperial stout, not an Eisbock and not an old ale in the traditional English sense of the word (let alone a 'traditional ale' - if anything, this is the opposite of 'traditional'!), rather a dark barleywine of sorts, but a very impressive one. One to stash away in a cellar and forget about for many years.

9/VIII/24 - 75cl bottle, shared @ home, BBQ with Seb, Maria, Nathan & Anke, BB: XII/2026 (2024-723) Thanks to Nathan for sharing the bottle!
Clear dark brown to black beer, small creamy beige head, unstable, dissipates quickly. Aroma: nice, good roast, pretty oxidized, mocha, cookies, some chocolate, ripe banana, lots of dried fruits, prunes, raisins, some caramel, nice, very complex. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: lots of alcohol, sweet and sugary start, acidic touch, some green apples, good roast, dry, caramel, pretty oxidized. Aftertaste: some chocolate, sugary, more roasted notes, bitter, hint of coffee, a bit spicy, some cardamom, black raisins, a bit sourish, oxidized, some soy sauce, caramel, hint of vanilla.

0.75 l bottle from 'DeBiersalon.nl', best before December 2026. Pitch black with a thin, frothy, quickly collapsing, light brown head. Intensely sweetish-malty, quite roasty and a bit boozy aroma of praline, mocha, roasted hazelnut and light vanilla. Heavily sweet, malty, fairly roasty, slightly boozy and a bit fruity taste of praline, mocha, roasted hazelnut, licorice and a touch of dark ripe fruits, followed by a long, fairly roasty-bitter, slightly boozy finish. Full body, almost oily, slightly effervescent mouthfeel, very soft carbonation. Heavy beer, very intense flavours, but fortunately not nearly as boozy as expected. Good one! On a sidenote: Hasn't got anything to do with an Old Ale, it's an Imperial Stout imho.
