The Burton IPA which is a proper old school India Pale Ale – brewed at an authentic strength of 7.1% and aged for five months in full sized wooden oak barrels, just like in the olden days. It’s packed with fresh all English hops and English barley malt. XT have worked with an old nineteenth century recipe and brewing techniques to bring this historic beer back to life.

1/2/2019. Key-keg at the XT Brewing tap takeover at the New Inn, Colchester. Pours amber brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of malt, fruit, toffee, hops, biscuit and a hint of alcohol, wood and butterscotch. Medium sweetness with moderate bitterness. Medium body, oily/sticky texture, soft to flat carbonation. Sticky, hoppy, toffee finish. Developed well, as it warmed slightly, liked it.

Cask at Sandford Park Alehouse. Clear dark amber with a frothy white head. Malty aroma, plums, berry, a bit of barrel like notes. Taste is the same, fruity malts, berries, plums. Medium bodied, smooth, fine carbonation. Not my kind of an IPA but certainly an interesting one.

GBBF Day 2. Cask. Hazy amber beer, decent bubbly pale cream colour head. Smooth and semi dry palate, reasonable fine carbonation. Dry malts, light dry wood. Mildly bitter toffee. Brandy comes through, light but clear. Marmalade hops bring up the rear. Mild spice too. Interesting and drinkable.

Cask handpull at GBBF 2018. Hazy russet colour lasting beige head. Slightly sour but also slightly sweet malt. Sweetish malty barley wine almost. With some sour grapefruit. Pretty authentic for an English strong ipa. Good hedgerow grapefruit finish. Good to style and a good example. Not the barrel aged version
