Originally a home-brew recipe of our Head Brewer, Greg, our Old Greg’s Barley Wine has become a thing of legend in the Five Points brewing calendar.

Brewed on New Year’s Eve each year, this Barley Wine is made with exclusively English hops; Target, Challenger and East Kent Goldings. Each vintage is bottle-aged for a year before making its way onto shelves, and each brew is a slightly different recipe.

Look out for the boozy sweetness and notes of apricot, jam and marmalade.

Recipe changed and ABV increased to 12.4% in 2018.

Bottle. Hop Hideout, Sheffield. Hazy amber. Film of white head. Heady, solvent like, bitter fruit. A bit woody. A bit musky. Taste is dry, and fairly bitter. Boozy palate. Finishes dry, and quite harsh bitter. Don’t care for this one.

Bottle thanks to Colin. It pours cloudy orange-amber with a small white head. The nose is rich, boozy, sweet, vanilla, dried fruits, guanabana, light smoke, creamy, rice pudding and white chocolate. The taste is bitter, toasty, spice, charred wood, burnt stuff, smoke, orange rind and light sweetness with a dry finish. Full body, moderate carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Unique for sure. I really like the aroma, but the taste is bit charry and burnt.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Cologne. Pours unclear orange-gold with a frothy off-white head. The nose has notes of gasoline, dried fruits, citrus. Light to medium sweet flavor with sturdy fusel notes, some grains. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Dominant fusels on the finish, light peat, grains, slight astringency. Not excellent.

Bottle shared at Leightons pad. Light hazed orange / golden coloured pour with a thin white head. Aroma is earthy, smoky, berry, caramel. Flavour is composed of farmyard dirty grains, orange, caramel, dung, little rubber, smokey phenols,. Really not a fan of this one. Palate is medium full, tangy, moderate to high carbonation. Weird beer.

Bottle from Ravenscroft Arms Ramsgate. Hazy dark russet brown with thin beige head. Sweetish strawberry jam aroma. Wow that’s kinda sweet, some smoke maybe, some strawberry jam which I like very much. Not much hop on finish. Yes a little bit of cigarette smoke maybe. ABV is fairly well hidden and I rather liked it. Good opening beer of the evening after cycling home in the snow.

Hazy reddish - amber beer, residual pale cream colour head. Palate is light but not much carbonation. Smooth malts, semi dry, little dark toffee. Mild smoke. Mellow marmalade hops. Finishes smooth and semi dry. Bitterish linger. A bit flat but tasty enough.
