Rutland Beast is strong yet exceptionally balanced. Dark earthy brown in colour, it’s fantastic flavours blend together to produce a mind blowing great beer.
Brewed using a combination of seven different malts and wheats, as well as three classic hop varieties, Rutland Beast is a true animal. Regarded as the ‘Bigger Brother’ of the Rutland Panther, the Beast is rarely spotted around these parts, but is a spectacular sight when seen.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Wahoo! At last! My 5th Rutland Rate! Have wanted to find this beer for a while now, good on 'Spoons getting this in. Decent condition too. It's a nice-looking beer - glowing mahogany in hue with a decent beige head and a light fizz. There's toffee, caramel, a touch of coffee, some plum and some wood. The mouthfeel is full, but a little slimy from the caramel. There's a hint of rough vodka. As others have noted, it's not a stout; it sits somewhere between an ESB and a strong mild I reckon. It would make a nice autumn or winter warmer, but possibly wasn't the ideal brew for a warm summer's day. Who cares though - it's a RUTLAND RATE!!!

Pint at the Crosse Keys. A dark colour in the glass and a very foamy and long-lasting head. The taste and the mouthfeel was all about those malts and they were quite sweet. A definite amped up mild, but not yet an Imperial Mild (that's something to try should anyone decide to brew it). A bit too much for a lunchtime beer and at the end it became a bit cloying.

Cask at GBBF ’17, 11/08/17. Light chocolate and raisin aroma. Dark and glossy. Thin but frothy beige head. Sweet and sour with a bitter base. Rum and raisin. Medium bodied. Slick. Soft carbonation. Low key finish. Good stuff. Need to get changed from a stout to a mild.

Finally! Cask at GBBF. It pours clear rich brown with a bubbly off-white head. The aroma is sweet, sticky, toasty grain, plenty of dried fruits, berry skin, earth and a bit of jam. The taste is of the same ilk: bitter - sweet, dried fruits, bit of jam, fruit cake, bread, soft sweetness and carmel with a soft finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Another beer which benefits from Good condition (think this was the fresh second cask). Decent fruity dark ale.
