The Herbalist is a new collaboration beer brewed in Southwold by Adnams Head Brewer, Fergus Fitzgerald, and Magic Rock Head Brewer, Stuart Ross. As a homage to Saison du Buff (a three way collaboration beer brewed by Dogfish Head, Stone and Victory breweries) this beer has plenty of complex, spicy flavours from the use of Saison yeast blended with our Adnams yeast, which are balanced by bags of citrus and tropical fruit aromas from the bold New World hops. To back up these fruity flavours, and because it seemed like fun, we’ve added four herbs which add even more fruity flavours to this bold beer.

Cask at the Plough & Harrow (JDW), Hammersmith Straw with a loose white head; citrusy aroma; sharp grapefruit taste with a grainy body , some lemon grass and hay; slightly let down by a cloying, sticky, fruity finish, but otherwise rather good.

Cask @ The Unicorn, Manchester. Tawny golden yellow creamy head. Hopped with high floral citrus notes and grapefruit dominant in this respect. Not a high bitterness but slightly soured. Quite tasty nonetheless with lots of aroma.

Cask at Victoria Station Spoons. It pours clear amber with a tiny white head. The nose is earthy, herb garden, spice, cracker, lemon meringue and medicinal notes. The taste is bitter-sweet, biscuit malt, cereal, sweet lemon verbena, lemon parfait, spice, hay and some floral notes with a dry, somewhat finish. Medium body and lowish carbonation. A touch flat if truth be told. I reckon this night work better on keg. Interesting stuff anyhow.

Cask at the Pelt Trader. Hazy gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light with decent fine carbonation. Smooth malts, modest sweetness. Nice combo of lemon, lime and semi sweet floralness ensues. Light touches of herb and spice. Little bubblegum ester. Light finish. Interesting and drinkable.
