A sessionable take on a hopfenweisse, an inventive fusion between an IPA and a German wheat beer. A fave of beer writers and Saturday Kitchen.

Keg at London Field. It pours hazy pale gold with a small white head. The nose is doughy, earth, hay, wheat, slight sweetness , dull smoke and citrus peel. The taste is crisp, bitter, citric, doughy, wheat, mild smoke, sort of cheese, acidity and orange with a dry, citric finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. A bit messy...

Very hazy gold beer, big white head. Palate is light and semi dry and minerally crisp. Semi dry wheaty malt, not sweet. Light orangey hops and touch of hop spice. Dry finish. Okay.

Bottle at the Warburton St Tap, 16/08/13. Hazed orange amber with a good sized white head. Nose is wheaty, caramel, nana’s, pinch of spice. Taste comprises orange rind, citrus, caramel, light spice, toasty malts. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, crisp and refreshing in the dryish finish. Tasty enough stuff but IPA ?

Bottle from Budgens, Islington. Hazy orange gold colour with thin white head. Estery aroma. Good hefe for an English version. It’s a bit more malty than some. Yes, decent, solid with esters throughout, some banana, some biting hop on finish. Just a little more character needed perhaps, but fine.

Cask at the brewery - London. Pours clear, rich good with a cry slight, white foam head. Nose carries some wheat and ripening bananas. Light to medium sweet flavor, some bread and wheat, some oily bananas, hints of mango and papaya. Light to medium bodied with soft to fin carbonation. Sweet finish with low bitterness, more wheat, bananas, some tropical fruits. Pretty decent balance overall. Touches of dry hay bitterness help cut into the wheaty sweetness.
