Unclear straw coloured. Huge, Belgian-style head at first. Not at all like an English bitter. Good and pleasant aroma of English hops, although slightly sour. Similar taste. A refreshing and highly drinkable beer, but not as good as a proper English bitter. To be reserved for a nice English summer’s day with 25 degrees, no rain and blue skies. I.e. may be stored for decades.

500ml bottle from Ludlow Food Centre, sipped whilst waiting for my phone to charge at a campsite. A light and breazy ale, very mild malts with a tantalising sniff of citrus. Nothing to write home about.

500 ml bottle conditioned, from Vaaland, Bryne. ABV is 4.2%. Plenty of sediment in the bottle. Hazy very pale yellow colour, like a witbier. Large and lasting white head. Moderate wheaty and yeast aroma with some spicy and zesty notes. Refreshing wheaty flavour, with citrussy, herbal and spicy hops. Nice bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. However, this is not a traditional English "bitter" by any stretch of the mind.

Cask at The Wellingron, Birmingham. Poured a clear light amber with a thin white bubbly head. The aroma is mildly caramel and fruit. The flavour is medium bitter, malty and with a smooth palate and hints of citrus. The hop selection worked well to deliver a very tasty ale.

Boxing Day 2012 and the house is quiet again as our Christmas guests have left: I’m at one with the world and Grimsby Town have just won 4-1 at Lincoln: great. Anyway I’ve got a 500ml bottle BBD of 25 Jan 2014 and poured it into an ’Old Speckled Hen’ badged vase shaped pint glass. Pale yellow/golden body with a slight haze to it: on top a full white crown of foam. Piney hop nose and taste: crisp, tangy and zingy. Citrus hints arrive as the beer warms a little in the glass. Nice blend of flavours with a malty understated presence ensuring this isn’t just about the hop content. Fruity notes throughout add to the complexity of the taste and enjoyment of the brew. OK more than brilliant.
