Cask at the Hope Tap, Reading. Pours a deep amber-bronze with a middling beige head. Now, that IS hoppy. There’s a huge, aggressive pine bitterness up front- in a paler beer I’d find this a bit over the top, but here it’s balanced by sweet, creamy caramel hops. This also makes the beer feel smooth, warming and comforting as it hits your throat. Afterwards there’s a tingle of chilli on the tongue and a zip of fresh citrus as it goes down. Ooh, and an odd hint of chocolate orange dancing temptingly through too- don’t know where that came from. With each mouthfeel you renew the upfront bitterness, but now safe in the knowledge that it’s not as overwhelming as it seems and there’s lots of other things to come. This is a very nice beer indeed!

Cask handpull at Watford moon under water JDW. Nice medium amber brown coloured pour with a lasting off white loose head. Aroma is lovely sticky piney hop resin, American citrus c hop. Some light caramel in the nose as well. Flavour is hop led, with grapefruit cirrus, woody pine and aggressive hop bitterness the coats the mouth. Malts are background with cara malts and a touch of rusty penny. Long duration of bitter citrus, and earthy wood. So impressed that Adnams and JDW got the alchemist to come over and brew. . Palate is medium bodied with lowish carbonation and laquer.

Cask at Moon Under Water, Leicester Sq. It pours deep amber with a decent bubbly beige head. The nose is pine needles, resin, papaya, peach, watermelon, guava and varnish. The taste is bitter, piney, resin, varnish, oily hops, earth, leather, sweet peach, caramel, soap and peppery grapefruit with a lingering bitter-resinous finale. Medium body, soft carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Punchy. Perhaps a touch chewy, but packed full of flavour.

Cask at the Willow Walk (W’Spoons), Victoria, London. A dark amber/brown coloured pour with a thin off white head on top. Hoppy, pine, grapefruit aroma. Tastes similar, hoppy, pine, grapefruit, quite bitter and dry.

Cask at the Bankers Draft, Bedford. Copper brown, clear with a thin head. A fair bit of natural carbonation. Massive pine hop aroma with notes of caramel and pecan. Extremely bitter taste at first, but this is tempered by a bit of sweetness. The finish is long, dry and refreshing. The massive bitterness makes a welcome return in the aftertaste. This is very, very good.

Cask at the Willow Walk, JDW - London. I cannot believe they got the Alchemist involved; next thing you know you’ll be able to get tinnies of Heady Topper in Spoons! Pours amber-gold with a frothy, off-white head. Lots of piney hops in the nose, some grass, grainy bread, ripe orange. Light-medium sweet flavor with nicely layered, dank and resinous hops, some toasty bread, earth, hints of brown sugar, dried berries. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation; fair condition. Well balanced on the finish with more gooey, resinous hops, dark pine sap, toasted grass, wholegrain bread, aged orange, mango, papaya. Great stuff. It doesn’t sing out at first but it’s a slow-burner that gets better as you go.

Cask at JDW Bishop Vesey; clear mahogany red pour with a thin off white head, aroma of tangerine and caramel, taste is quite punchy and fruity, consiting of grapefruit, light pine, orange and some caramel action, solid collab.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. Reddish copper with a thin cream head; orange fruit aroma; full bodied with an orange and grapefruit citrus taste; and a sharp, refreshing, lasting, grapefruit finish. Stylish and very impressive.

Cask @ The Waterhouse, Manchester. Mahogany (matched the colour of the table I was sat at!) with a creamy head. Has a fairly strong taste but there’s enough fruitiness to please with a tropical fruit nose - where its strength is also evident.
