Bottle from The Strand Wines, Walmer and drunk at home. Black beer with lasting tan head. Roast aroma and some sourness fruit actually. It’s quite a good old ale I would say. Some stout elements, but some sour plum damson flavour too. A little bit of wood. Could be fuller in the mouth I guess. I do like the sourness on the finish though. Not sure if it’s intentional. Like sour damsons. Good.

Bottle @ the Appellation Comely Bank tasting. This one from the Bottle Bank. Appearance - close to opaque black with a nice fawn head. Nose - burnt wood, chocolate, toffee. Taste - more of the same. I have to say that the burnt wood note from the barrel is dominant over the usual stout qualities. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a finish that is not refreshing or elegant as the burnt wood note is slightly abrasive on the finish. Overall - a good stout that has been slightly hampered by a piece of wood.

Bottle at Leighton’s. It pours deep brown a minimal head. The nose is earthy, spicy, umami, brown bread, dust, cocoa and gravy. The taste is roasty, earth, wood, mild acidity, dark fruit, berry, spice, umami and odd meatiness. Medium body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. A bit odd...

6th December 2014
Opaque dark brown beer, good pale tan head. Palate is semi dry and crisp. Mild dark malts, trace of dark chocolate. The barreling hasn’t sweetened this beer at all, but has rather soured it, in terms of there is a little Flemish Red like sourness, even a whisper of red wine. Light semi dry finish. Curious beer but interesting.
