Why is the called ’Auld Toon’ - doesn’t say owt about it on the laber? Bright clear gold beer, tidy white head. Palate is airy, mildly dry and has decent fine carbonation. Smooth malts, lightly sweet. Spice. Sweetish floralness that has a soapy edge. Underneath there is crystallised fruits and dried fruits. Airy spicy finish. All right apart from the soapy note.

Keg, sampler tray at Six Degrees North. Crocheted lacing from a film type layer. Hazy orange-gold coloured body. Mid-sweet fruity nose of orange and peach. Fruity flavours added by a subdued touch of spices and moments of yeasty fruitiness towards the lingering aftertaste. Very well integrated alcohol. Likable (Aberdeen 12.04.2016).

(Draught at Mother Kelly’s, Bethnal Green, London, 26 Nov 2015) Hazy pale amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with citrus, orange peel, dried fruit and marmalade. Malty, fruity taste with notes of orange peel, marmalade, dried apricots, candy sugar and a balanced spicy bitterness. Almost full body, with a certain sweetness. Tasty and well balanced tripel. Nice one.

Bottle from Oddbins Beer Shop, Blackheath. Orange/gold pour with a white head. Aromas of tangerine, varnish, orange pith and sweet spice. Flavours of honey, more sweet fruits coming through, bags of sweet spice. Boozy old mouthfeel. Good representation of the style.

Many thanks to Sean for this bottle. The beer starts fresh and spicy. Great fresh yeast, easy to drink and quite mild for the 9%. The aftertaste has hints of bitterness, fresh and floral. Round and spicy-yeasty mild. Great beer!

Bottle from Cork and Cask. Appearance - amber with a head that disappears seconds after pouring. Indication that it’s not bottle conditioned which I’d have expected for style. Nose - oranges, a hint of coriander. It’s going down the Karmeliet line here. Taste - yeah nice oranges and gentle spice again. Green herb note too. Pickled lime finish. Palate - medium to full bodied with a big tangy texture and a long dry tangy finish. Great palate. Overall - three quarters of the way there to being a very good Belgian Tripel. The lack of bottle conditioning means it lacks the zing and creaminess that the style should have.

Keg at the Hanging Bat - Edinburgh. Pours lightly unclear gold with a creamy white head. Strong yeast and phenol aroma with notes of doughy wheat and tangerine. Medium sweet flavour with mild fusel alcohols, hay, phenols, bubblegum, ripening citrus. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish, some dry wheat, rindy tangerine. Pretty nice tripel.

Keg at Six D Aberdeen. It pours golden-amber with a decent white head. The nose is sweet, juicy, honey, apple, pear, melon, light spice and apricot preserve. The taste is bitter-sweet, apple, alcohol warmth, pear, melon, straw, honey, damp leaves, wood and spice with a dry, warming finish. Medium-full body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Thankfully not too sweet at all. Pretty nice tripel.
