This version of the beer is exclusively brewed in the UK for the J D Wetherspoons Real Ale Festival.

Doug Odell from Odell Brewing Company, Fort Collins near Denver in Colorado, joined with Ian Kennedy and the brewing team here at Slateford Road to brew Odell 90 Shilling, the flagship ale of the American craft brewery. The beer is limited edition for the JD Wetherspoon beer festival and will be available for the next two weeks.

It is very much a homecoming for this style of beer. Doug’s own recipe is inspired from the Shilling or Scotch Ale beer from Scotland, when beers were classified by the shilling price per hogshead. These shilling classifications were later simplified to names when the ranges became more defined, 60 Shilling was Light ale, 70/- Heavy, 80/- Export and 90/- Strong or Scotch Ale.

Crosse Keys Spoons. Clear dark amber beer, tidy pale tan head. Light dry palate. Whisper of sulphur. Orange and red fruits underneath the toffee malt. Subtle bubblegum ester. Dry finish. Okay.

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol 12/10/11. Brown with a slight off-white head. Sweet, slightly buttery aroma with some fruit drops and hint of roastiness. Slightly caramelised flavour with more roastiness and a bitter finish. Very Caledonian.

[Cask at the Monk’s Retreat (JDW), Reading] Deep ruby-brown with a moderate cream head and a light fizz. Fruity at first, then buttery in the mouth and a mild, dry roastiness to finish. The buttery mouthfeel makes it a little cloying at times. It’s OK, but definitely the worst of the guest beers at this Spoons fest.

Cask @ Society Room, JDW. Spoons Real Ale Festival autumn 2011. Was looking forward to this one, but turned out to be quite disappointing. Amber colour, off-white head. Nose is caramel, toffee, bit of fruits. Flavour is sweet toffee, toastiness, followed by some sweet fruityness. Slightly dry and sweet finish.

Cask handpull at Knights Templar Spoons. Clear chestnut colour with lasting beige head. Diacetyl aroma. This was made at Caledonian rught? So no surprise there then. Its a fruity malty beer with way too much diacetyl struck right through it and cos of that I find it almost undrinkable. I hate diacetyl

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. Copper with a tight cream head; aroma of blackberries; the flavour is a mix of sour grain and autumn berries, with a smooth and creamy texture; the finish is dry and biscuity with leafy hops and more autumn fruit. I found this rather pleasant, definitely in the "heavy" style, but very drinkable.

Cask at the Skylark, Croydon. It pours clear moderate brown, with pretty much no head. The nose is chocolate, caramel, wood and light spice. The taste is subtle wood, dark fruit, leather, light spice, chocolate, roasted malt and caramel. Medium body and soft carbonation. Inoffensive, but unexciting.
