Brewed to an old monastic recipe by Little Valley Brewery in Hebden Bridge, this dark, Trappist-style beer is full-bodied with a taste of rich fruit and malt. Bottle conditioned to ‘dubbel’ strength.

Working closely with Wim van der Spek, head brewer at Little Valley Brewery in Hebden bridge, the monks of Ampleforth have once again begun to sell ‘La Biere Anglaise’. Following extensive research, Wim has paired modern brewing techniques with the fragments of information available to produce Ampleforth Abbey Dubbel – a beer as rich in history as it is in flavour.

Bottle from Campbell's, Leyburn. A chestnut-brown beer with a beige head and a light fizz. Mild banana up front, with lots of malty brown bread and caramel, and a touch of roastiness and straw. Pleasant cross between an English Strong Ale and a Dubbel

330ml bottle: BBE Nov 17. Poured into a Westmalle Trappist chalice at home on 1st July 17, the last beer in a mini-tasting session with myself. Mahogany colour, clean looking: the head a thin off-white wispy affair. Malty front to the brew, semi-sweet throughout, slight bitterness in the lasting finish. Decent.

Bottle from Buckfast Abbey. It pours deep mahogany red - brown with a thick off - white head. The nose is bitter - sweet, candied fruits, sweet berry, earthy roast and coffee grounds. The taste is earthy roast, toasty, charred wood, cocoa nibs, light spice, dark fruits, some alcohol warmth, coffee, candy and liquorice with a dry, toasted finish. Medium - full body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Decent.
