Porter Brewed with Northern Michigan Sweet Black Cherries
Dark, velvety, sweet, and toasty. Black Cherry Porter entered the Short’s-iverse as part of our Imperial Beer Series in 2007. We coulda dumped black cherry puree into a light, refreshing beer, but Joe had an itch for something more robust. The deep, rich flavors of an Imperial Porter are the perfect compliment to our regions national export, and Black Cherry Porter was made and quickly became a Pub favorite.

355 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Pitch black colour, large brown head. Primarily roasty aroma, notes of coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla and cherries, hints of resinous hops. The flavour has also notes of coffee and dark chocolate, and is not very sweet. There is also a hint of smoke. The cherries are far more subdued than I expected. Hoppy and roasty finish.

0.35l bottle @ Patricks, Kristiansand. A near pitch black one with a nice big chocolaty head that sticks around for quite a while. On the aroma this one is quite chocolaty, cold coffee, roasted, some hints of cardboard and beef stock. Not to much of those fruity or sweet cherries. It has a slight sourness all the way in the flavor. It feels quite flat on the carbonation level and it's oily on the texture. Not as roasty or cherry-fruity as I might had expected, more lactic, woody and light sour. Yeah, well, not completely there for me, but it's definitely drinkable and somehow tasty. Did they perhaps forget the cherries in my bottle? 29.03.2012

355 ml bottle @ Patricks. Dark brown body with a fast disappearing beige head. Aroma of roasted malt with a hint of fruit/berries and a little hint of wet wood/mold (in a positive way). Flavor is roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, dry fruit, hint of berries and a nice touch of Brett. Nice body, decent aftertaste. A pleasant and balanced beer with rather subdued cherry flavor.

On tap at The Beer Temple, Amsterdam 29.02.12 Pours almost black with next to no head. Fruity and tangy but a little sweet, the fruitiness (cherries clearly noticeable) lingers somewhat and they taste not unlike the cherries that you might get in posh Ice Cream, I like this, some vanilla also shows but not sure of that is mind trickerie following the Ice Cream reference. Bottle. Weak fruity and slightly buttery aroma. Black colour. Small light brown head. The flavour is sweetish and slightly citric with a little buttery cherry note. Do not know if it is really butter, but it tastes like it - might be from the cherries.
