Cask pint in my local Wetherspoons on 8th Jan 2016. Deep chestnut body with a decent head that gave some impressive lacing: malts rule the brew throughout. Semi-sweet with a dry finish. Didn’t pick up any ’old ale’ style flavours and aromas. Decent enough even if it didn’t feel like an ’old ale’.

A limited edition according to the pump label. Deep golden in colour, slight head. Fairly sweet aroma, not a high bitterness but a lovely texture.

Cask at Bricklayers Arms, Putney. It pours clear amber with a medium off-white head. The nose is wood, leather, dried fruit and touch of toast. The taste is wood, leather, leaf, red berry and subtle varnish, with a long dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. A pretty tasty and well-integrated old ale.

Cask at Hamilton Hall, JDW, London. Pours clear, dark amber with a foamy, tan head. Leathery fruits on the nose, suggestions of burnt leaves. Light to medium sweet flavor with more dry, leathery fruits, berries, earthy and leafy bitterness, some toasty brown bread. Light bodied with fine to average carbonation. Dirty, earthy bitter finish, more dried fruits, purple grape skins, berries. Decent offering.

Bottle from Stirchley Wines and Spirits. Reddish brown pour with a thin broken tan head. Weak malty, slightly metallic aroma. The flavour is bitter, malty and sticks to the palate. Some bitterness hangs around for quite a while. A most agreeable ale.

Bottle at home in London with Lyoli. Pours clear brown with a soft, frothy white foam. Aroma is lightly toasted, doughy malts with hints of toffee. Flavor is medium sweet with some dry, leathery fruits, toffee, burnt sugar and, oddly, a hefty dose of grassy bitterness. Light to medium in body with fine carbonation. Moderately sweet finish, somewhat bland, with mild notes of toffee, dried leaves, toasted grass, mild dough, dark sugars, hints of dark fruits. Decent.

Cask at Pigs Ear. Clear amber beer, small pale tan head. Smooth palate, a little dry. Very mild toffee malt. Whisper of sulphur. Insipid orange hop. Dry finish. Meh!
