Pure chocolate in colour, with an abundance of chocolate malt and caramel in the aroma. A luxuriant velvety mouth feel with flavours of chocolate, mocha and biscuit, ending with a soft hoppy finish.

April 2008. Smooth dark brown ale. Dry with a very light touch of hop. A noticeable but subtle chocolate tone in the finish.

[cask at Back of Beyond, Reading]Slightly worrying pink reflection from bottom of glass. Gave off such a strong chocolate aroma (american sweet candy chocolate rather than decent chocolate) that I had to move this beer some way away in order to actually be able to appreciate the other beers I had. Chocolate pronounced in taste, and oddly does actually taste like chocolate drops rather than chocolate - not sure how this is possible, and wonder if it’s by autosuggestion from the beer name. Despite the chocolate flavour the beer itself is as thin and watery as the ABV suggests, with a conflicting roasted & bitter aftertaste. Easy to drink and unusual to have the chocolate flavour with a best bitter, but one can’t help feeling that there’s a reason why chocolate flavour is normally only added to stout.

Cask-conditioned at the Berkeley, Bristol (JDW) 17/4/08. Medium brown coloured with a slight tan head. Sweet toffee and chocolate aroma with a hint of roastiness. Sweet flavours with plenty of chocolate and a slightly dry finish. Ok in small quantities.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Dark chestnut clour with a thin cream head; rich roasted malt aroma; thin in the mouth, clear bitter chocolate flavour supported by some malt and red fruit; disappointing finish, reminding me of coffee grounds.

Cask handpull at Victoria Sporks. Dark brown colour with lasting creamy beige head. Milky choccy coffee flavour. Some dark cherry/plum fruit too. Bit grainy in the mouth. Pretty decent balance, touch of hop sting on finish. Choccy aroma. Fine. I always find myself sat outside the ladies loo in this pub and I have no idea why.
