The Stoke Red cider apple takes its name from the area in which it was originaly grown, Rodney Stoke in Somerset, but it has become common in most cider apple growing areas of England. This popularity is a result of it being a good apple to sweeten, well bodied and with a good flavour.

The cider produced from this apple takes a long time to ferment, which makes the cider late to mature.

The trees tend to be of a medium height and bear fruit early December. The apple, as you might guess from it’s name is a strong red colour with a slight tint of yellow.

750ml bottle at 6.5%. Golden amber colour, short-lived bubbles on top and aroma of solventy funk, wood, leather, barnyard. Taste is sweet, funky, mellow apple, meaty, leather, barnyard with some soft tannins. Oily mouthfeel, medium bodied, low carbonation, sweet finish. Nicely drinkable, although quite sweet.

Bottle at home in Hackney - aged a good few years. Picked this up at Kris Wines back in the day. Pours lightly hazy orange-gold with a few bubbles atop. Rich, fairly sweet but still with a little musty dryness, a little apple sauce, low bitterness, just a little peel, touches of funk. Medium bodied, lightly oily and chewy. Lightly warming finish, more mild stewed apples, some musty cellar, red apples, a hint of caramel. Quite tasty.

Cask at the Peterborough beer Festival 2018. An attractive hazed bright, golden yellow coloured pour with a fine white head aroma is punchy spicy, verging on vinegar, tart apple, paraffin.. Flavour is composed of semi sweet, tart apple, plastic, sweet and tart. Palate is semi sweet and tangy. Nice. Pineapple juice.

Cask at King’s Arms. It pours lightly hazy amber with no head. The aroma is earthy, funky, tangy, sweet, red apple, red berry and barnyard. The taste is sweet, juicy, tangy, red apple, red skin pear, candy cane, summer fruits, wood, tannin, funk and sour candy with a sweet, tangy finish. Medium body and flat carbonation. Even through it’s sweet, it’s pretty tasty.

Bag in a Box @ Euston Cider Tap. Way too sweet, astringent & concentrated to be drinkable for me.

Corked bottle from Beers of Europe, King’s Lynn
Hazy amber color, no head. Mild aroma of vinegar and hazelnuts. Rather oily mouthfeel, without carbonation; semi sweet flavor, that moderates the very strong astringency, and light vinegar; some apple juice flavor too.
Pleasant.
