This shimmering gold amber coloured beer has a light, smoked malt aroma. It’s well-rounded, with a great taste of malts and with a hint of sweetness. The smoky taste is quite dominant at each new draught. An original and notable beer, La Charbonnière is a house specialty.

Bottle: Poured an amber color ale with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of smoked wood with caramel malt in the background. Taste is also a nice mix between some deep smoky notes and smoked salmon with some lightly sweet caramel malt. Body is about average with good carbonation. Very well done with nice balance between the smoke and the malt bill.

Tap at Churchkey. Dark maroon, thin beige head. Aroma of campfire. Taste has malt, scotch, chocolate, and a finish of housefire. Very complex, tasty, characterful. Tasted next to the Paradox Smokehead, and this one puts the Smokehead to shame.

Tap - a phenomenal smoked beer, reminiscent of schlenkerla urbock - smooth, creamy, full mouthfeel, with a strong, but perfectly integrated smokiness, working well atop the medium sweet malt base - notes of toasted marshmallow and caramel - soft edges all around - conjures memories of campfires - sooo smoky.

Sample, draught, savoured on site on December 28 2006; eye: amber, clear, no effervescence, small ring of an off-white head; nose: faint odours (glass?, cold?), light smoke, light caramel; mouth: smoke, light caramel, finale all in smoke and reminding of hickory, medium body, surprisingly and relatively thin, quite carbonated FRANÇAIS Échantillon, en fût, savourée sur place le 28 décembre 2006; oeil : ambrée, claire, pas d’effervescence, très petit anneau de mousse blanc cassé; nez : peu odorante (verre?, grippe?), légère fumée, léger caramel; bouche : fumée, léger caramel, finale tout en fumée avec des souvenirs de hickory, corps moyen, curieusement et relativement mince, assez carbonatée, légèrement sucrée et amère

An amber beer with a disappearing beige head. The aroma is smokey combined with a very slight note of caramel. The flavor is also smokey, clearly from beechwood, but also with notes of caramel, and with a dry smokey end.

On draught 2/25/05 at the Moan and Dove, Péché Mortel release party. Served in a tumbler between 47-52 degrees.
Deep orange-yellow colored beer, thick looking (wavy and transluscent) with a small pillow of off-white head, moderate retention. Aroma of spicy hops, little bit of earthiness and saltiness. Some sweet toffee in the nose as well. The smoke flavor comes out swinging from the get-go. Rich, salty, sweet smoked-malt works perfectly with the fluffy, lightly creamy body. Even with all of the smokiness, it dosent get boring (to me) and I happily go back for a second glass. Not a syrupy or heavy body, but not a light or watery one either. It strikes a good balance, so to speak. Torn between giving this a 4 or a 5 for palate. Malt could be said to get a bit too sweet, in the end, but it hardly worries me. Low carbonation, no alcohol apparency. I’m sold, but then, I’m a sucker for rauchbiers.

Amber coloured. Medium bodied, big flavour of smokey wood. Well balanced, and flavourful for being only 5.5%.

Very well balanced. Great smokey flavours, chewy malt. Very long finish. So smooth you'd swear it was a lager, but it is top fermented.
