The Thomas Hooker Imperial Porter is a full-bodied dark lager which draws its roots to the stronger porters of 19th Century England which would evolve into today’s stronger stouts. The porter derives tremendous complexity from the use of 8 different malts blended to balance sweet, caramel flavor with the coffeeish taste supplied by a judicious use of dark roasted malts. This brew is generously hopped with German and American hops that come to life as the beer is allowed to warm to its ideal temperature of 58-60 degrees. A great brew to add that holiday warmth and cheer to any beer lover’s winter. CHEERS.

not my favorite style unless there is something to knock off the maltiness like coffee or vanilla, but this was really nice, i think because hooker didnt go too big in terms of abv with this one. usually hooker has been a study in middle of the roadiness, but this was a little more out of the box than usual, easier to drink than i thought, nice rich maltiness but not sickly sweet, abv adds to the flavor instead of dominating it. very good.

Review from notes, sampled 1/29/2008 500ml swingtop bottle Bottled in 2006 purchased at Julio’s in 2008. Pours a solid black, with a large fluffy head that wouldn’t quit. Aroma held some surprises. Alcohol, yeast, plums, cherries, some caramel some citrusy hops. Taste of alcohol, roasted coffees and chocolate and some more dried fruits some grapefruit and pine. Thick creamy mouthfeel. Lots of carbonation. Nice brew all around. Not quite what I was expecting, but a great sipper nonetheless.

Bouteille.

Use a snifter. I let sit for 15 minutes before I drank. In that time the small head vanished to nothing. Light spotty lacing. Nose is roasted coffee, dark fruit, and burnt malt. Dark fruit being the aroma that sands out the most. Medium body with ample carbonation and a smooth, somewhat watery body. Flavor is fairly roasted and a bit sweet, not sick sweet, just right. The taste mirrors the nose. A bit of coffee as it warms. A well put together brew. I bet this is AWESOME on tap or cask. nice job T.H.
