Barley Wine Style Ale is a big beer made with six different malts (Pale Ale, Crystal, Caramunich, Wheat, Chocolate and Roasted Barley) and balanced with a very full hop charge of Summit, Challenger and Fuggles hops. It is a deep reddish brown color with a complex fruity nose, a very full body, and an interesting balance between grains and hops which ends with a pleasing dry taste. To fully enjoy all the flavors, this ale is best drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. 8.5% alcohol by volume.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a strong cola glow and a rather large tan head. Aroma of pit fruits, fresh hops, caramel, toffee, roasted malt and a bunch of more sugars and a hint of oak. Full-bodied; Strong roasty flavour with a lot of pit fruits and a whole lot of fresh and bitter hops. Aftertaste shows a lot of alcohol bite, some piney hoppiness and a large sweet presence that lasts for a while. Overall, a decent barley wine with a lot of character and no shortness of flavours. I sampled this 65 cL bottles purchased from McKinnon’s Meat Market in Salem, New Hampshire, sampled later in the evening from Nashua, New Hampshire.

(Bottle) Dark brownish ruby colour with frothy, pale brown head. Malty, fruity nose with caramel, red berries, treacle, orange peel and dusty hops. Malty taste with notes of caramel, dried fruit, red berries, chocolate, molasses, citrus peel, pine needles and lots of earthy hops in a bitter, salty, fairly vinous finish. Full body, fairly sweet with a warming alcohol touch. A bit rough around the edges, but might gain some balance with a little cellaring. Not perfectly balanced, but tasty and warming.

Sample at the Barley Wine beer tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 01/14/10. The brew is a mostly clear dark brown color with red around the edges. Thick khaki head that recedes steadily, and sticky patches of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, and dark fruit. Medium to full body with flavors of caramel malt, ripe fruit, and hops. A bit of leather as well. The finish is roasted malt with a lingering fruit left behind. Decent overall.

Bomber from BevMo Salinas. Nose of raisins, toffee, and an old ale note, kind of like HOTD Adam. very dark brown with a medium, glass lacing, cinnamon tan head. Flavor is lightly sweet fading to light bitterness, prunes, and a more bitter finish.
