Old Boss is based on a recipe from the 19th century. At the height of the Temperance Movement, brewery founder William Moorhouse produced much celebrated low strength hop bitters. Old Boss was an award winning brew and Moorhouse’s brewers have revived the brand at a robust full strength. Brewers Gold hops, Maris Otter and Crystal malts ‘deliver a delightfully balanced premium bitter, straw in colour with a hint of citrus and spice’. The traditional pump clip reflects the original bottle label and boasts two awards dating back two centuries.

Handbottled (thanks kikster!). Goldeny orange colour with a small head. Aroma is bready and caramel malts along with wood, fruits, mild sap and resiny notes. Flavour is rather similar with some crisp maltyness added.

[Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading] Slightly hazy gold, with a moderate white head and a light sparkle. Lemon dominates from start to finish, set against a sweet maltiness and just a hint of a dusty bitterness. Pleasant, easy drinking ale, but lacks any real bite.

Clear gold beer. Semi dry crisp palate. Juicy but slightly bitterish hops that have a sweeter note at the very end. Alright.

(Cask at Penderel’s Oak JDW, Holborn, London, 15 Apr 2009) Pale copper colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of biscuity malt, citrus and grass. Fruity, malty taste with citrus and orange peel. Slightly soapy with a generous citrussy bitterness in a fresh finish. Starts sweet, but turns drier towards the end. Nice, fresh and tasty.

Cask at The Exchange, JDW, Banbury, Oxon, 20-04-09 Pours light amber with a slim white head. Aroma has a touch of citric but also possibly showing signs of being a little past its best. To be fair this looks a good beer, but the taste confirms my suspicions, it’s quite tired the citrus bite has all but gone, bitterness is more staleness, not great, couldn’t finish though I see others drinking it, will look for and try again to re-rate when the opportunity arises. A3 A4 F3 P2 Ov6 1.8 Had this again at The Postal Order, JDW, Worcester 17.09.11 Pours amber, really citric sharp and vinegary, I took this back and requested to change this wasn’t a problem and the barman suggested that this beer is always like this, to be fair to him my last rating 2 years ago would suggest that he’s right and this isn’t a great beer.
