Democracy for Children charity auction
Mikkel, head brewer and owner of Mikkeller and Michael and Jeppe, owners of Denmark’s most specialized beer store Ølbutikken, conceived the brilliant idea of brewing a special beer to be sold at auction to raise money for this project. So they created a special, 8 month sherry cask barrel-aged version of Mikkel’s rare and delicious X Imperial Stout brewed exclusively for the beer festival in Valby, Denmark in May 2007. This is a one-time, very limited edition - only 40 bottles (75cl champagne bottle) are available! Each bottle has been numbered and signed by brewer Mikkel, and 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the school democracy project in Mozambique.
Thank you,
Mikkel, Michael & Jeppe

Bottle number 15, drunk 6/10/17.
Dark ebony body of undetermined clarity, topped by a small, tan head showing moderate-to-low retention.
Nose is full of sherry and moderate oxidation, creating soy, peanut brittle but also the more refined tea, hazelnut and dry toffee character of a very old sherry. Smells surprisingly good, much better than most 10 year-old Imperial stouts. No metal or dirt, nor any autolytic character. Booze is controlled, despite it not seeming fudgey or cakey. Plentiful dark fruit with breathing/warming. No doubt a very well-brewed beer and if it was a sugar bomb, it’s certainly benefited from aging, as there’s little/no sign of it here.
Sticky, rich and chocolatey in the mouth with peanut, soy and cardboard showing through a bit more than in the nose. Still, it’s lightly carbonated and controlled on the alcohol, with big fig, raisin, plum and tobacco notes and moderate sherry on the finish. Quite a good one, and glad I got to try it even if it’s past its prime.

Bottle shared at the Kenny 20K mega monster tasting. 14/01/2016. Huge thanks to Kenny for this one. Viscous oily opaque black coloured pour with a lasting very dark tan head. Aroma is big rough, slightly farmyard, soy, some jammy fruits, solvent alcohol,. Flavour is composed of oily dark chocolate, fruit jammy, umami, bitter black malts, some coconut. Thick and chewy palate, low carbonation, oily, chewy. Some cough syrup and liquorice in the finish. Covonia cough syrup. Good flavour but tough going.

Bottle shared at Kenny’s 20K tasting - London. Big thanks to Ken himself for this one. Pours oily black with a bubbly brown head. The aroma holds well roasted malts, chocolate, earth, dried dark fruits. Heavy sweet flavour, with oily and syrupy chocolate, baking cocoa, rich roast, scorched earth bitterness. Full bodied, thick and chewy, with fine carbonation. Sits quite heavy on the palate. Hot finish, very sugary, with bitter charred wood, brown sugar, chocolate sauce, ripe fruits, berries. Good stuff overall. Very, very rich.

Bottle #31/40 at Kenny’s 20K tasting, thanks to the main dude himself. It pours jet black with a tiny tan head. The nose is rich, umami, dark chocolate, chewy malts, light soy sauce ,some Marmite, vinous and jammy fruits. The taste is rich, vinous, jammy, fruit compote, oily, slick, chocolate, warming alcohol, charred wood, fruit cake, umami, light soy sauce vibe, liquorice, salted chocolate and sherry. Full body, fine carbonation and chewy mouth-feel. Very rich, but I can’t help but enjoy it. Intense stuff!

Bottle split at Madmitch76 20K tasting, big thanks to Mitch himself, 16/01/16 bottle#31/40. Massive deScription or wat ? Pitch black with a dirty tan covering that dissipates to a swirl and edgeing. Nose is soy sauce, chocolate fondue, icing sugar, Terrys chocolate orange, light spice, dark malts, light roast. Taste comprises toffee fudge, sweet licks, molasses, chocolate maltesers, no soy notes in the taste, black forest gateaux, chocolate and jam spread. Full bodied, fine carbonation, subtle sherry whisper at the last post. Solid BA impy, has aged well, subtle barrel ... very quaffable.

Sherry Barrel Aged. Bottle 40/40. Opened after a night out with the missus and her work mates at one of their weddings! Phew what a relief, peace and quiet and a craft beer! Beautiful nose of chocolate and sherry. Smooth silky palate. Opaque black in colour. A sweet sherryish start and then there is a little carbonation providing a brief bite and then some minerals. The main body is a complex medley of chocolate, sherry and mildly spicy licorice which is the type of licorice you normally only get in a proper Vintage Port from the 1970s! Rich dark finish with a some good cherry and red fruit coming to the fore and a parting note of yeast and coffee. Quite stunning! Depite it being a 750 at 15% I could barely restrain myself from bolting it. Very easy to be praiseworthy about such a rare (and expensive!) beer but this is honestly the best beer I have ever had!
2011 Note - still the best! If anyone has a 2006 version then I have one more of this one we can share or possibly trade!
2014 Note. Found some of this in the back of the fridge, I’d kept an inch and a bit in a jar. Still tastes amazing. Rich malts, chocolate, light coffee, big sherry - madeira - port. Light warming finish. Amazing beer.
