Hancock's HB dates from at least 1925 and is a traditional Cask Ale with an aroma full of crystal toffee and pear drops, with a hint of liquorice. A touch drying, it's soft and smooth malty palate has a faintly sharp finish.

Handpull cask at the Salmon, Leicester. Alarmingly orange with a full beige head. Light malty aroma, not much to it. Bittersweet taste, thin malt and some savoury cooking herbs. Bittering hops encircle the finish with a slightly metallic aftertaste. It's one of the classic old man bitters but it's refreshing enough.

Half-pint, cask ale at Lamb. Hazy copper coloured body, a few bubbles at the surface, clingy lacing. Malt-fruity aromas, dry and sourish. Caramel malty flavours, hints of dried fruits. Slightly bitter ending. Okay, not in its best condition. (Newport 03.10.2018).

On cask at the Beacon, Wellington. Appearance - deep amber with a decent head. Nose - hay, sweet malt. Taste - light toffee and sweet malt. The toffee increases and becomes a bit too much after a while. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a finish that could be fresher. Overall - initially pleasant enough but became a bit sickly.

Cask ’sample’ @ the opening night of a new ’Smoke House’ near my house on the outskirts of Shrewsbury. Badged and described by staff as their own beer. It wasn’t. Fobbed up out the glass. Weak, watery with brown bread, dirty malt and not a lot else. Boring brown bitter.

Cask @ Ty Mawr, Llanbedr. Copper-gold with a creamy-frothy head. Bitter in character with a mild sweetness to what is a good old fashioned ale.

Hand-pulled pint in Restroom Number 2 on Cleethorpes railway station on 10th Nov 2012: I’m so out of touch I still thought this was brewed in Wales and not contracted out to whatever ’Coors’ site needs some custom! Anyway the beer looked fine: light amber, old gold in colour with a good head of bubbles sat on top. Weak nose and watery feel to this session brew, but it’s not all bad news: there is a hint of maltiness in the aroma and it comes out nicely within the taste as well. No great flavours but it isn’t offensive or gagging in any way: just a fairly thin tasting session ale that could do with another handful of hops and malts thrown into the grist tub during the brewing process.
