Chestnut is a special brew celebrating our Emerald anniversary, 35 years’ brewing… this is today’s take on a very traditional formula, producing a truly modern dark mild.
A dark chestnut beer, its full treacle toffee sweetness is moderated by undertones of tropical fruits to produce a taste that lingers. Chestnut won’t leave you reeling either…. it’s a 3.5% beer (to celebrate our 35 years!).

Cask at the Pump House, Solihull. Poured a clear light brown with a frothy off white head. The aroma is nutty, light malt, light hop. The flavour is light bitter with a watery light nutty malt, woody hop bitter palate. Light bodied with soft carbonation. Pretty light all round but refreshing and drinkable.

Cask at Hamilton Hall, JDW - London. Pours clear copper with a foamy tan head. The nose holds some simple, lightly toasted bread, faint leaves, berries. Light sweet flavour with more berry character, bread, low bitterness, some crackers. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Pretty good balance on the finish, more basic bready malts, touches of toffee, leathery berries. Tasty.

Cask handpull at Crosse Keys Gracechurch Street. Clear very dark brown colour lasting beige head. Brown malty beer. Aroma of light chocolate flavour of twigs. Light finish. Not much hop presence. It’s a midlands mild.

Cask @ Montgomery’s Tower, Shrewsbury. Undoubtedly the first brewery in existence to brew a 3.5% Mild as their special anniversary beer. Mind-boggling. Tastes like liquid chestnuts and bark with a leafy aroma. Struggled to finish this half pint. Pointless, boring and represents everything that’s wrong with English ale.

Cask half-pint in The Waterfront, Shrewsbury on 21st April 2015. Mahogany brown with a red hue (OK, Chestnut) body with a small beige head. Light malty lead in both the nose and taste, gentle, subtle flavours and a little watery, but a typical Mild, if a bit sweeter than most.

Cask @ Moon Under Water, Manchester. More deep copper than chestnut, with a creamy head. Has some nice pale malts in its nose and lovely enough smoothness in the palate.
