This dark beer has aromas of coffee, fruit and pine notes, with a smooth roasted coffee and chocolate character, balanced with sweetness and bitterness – plus a lingering coffee, spicy hop and light citrus finish.

The Playhouse Spoons, Colchester. Clear dark brown - amber beer. Little pale tan head. Palate is light and fresh, semi dry. Fine minerally carbonation. Semi sweet dark dark malt and red berry fruits. Mild sweet chocolate. Only a hint of coffee. Finishes semi dry and mild crispness. Nicely joined up and drinkable light porter.

Cask at the moon under water JDW spring beer fest 2013. Ruby red brown colour no head. Coffee aroma with some booze. Thin palete with gentle carb. Coffee and brown malt flavour. Not a lot going on but quite drinkable.

Cask at William Stead JDW, Darlington. Black brown colour, stable tan head and slight aroma of roast malt. Coffee & roast malt taste with some dark berry fruity notes and a light bitter finish. Creamy mouthfeel, light bodied, soft carbonation. Quite OK.

Cask at the Catherine Wheel (JDW), Henley. Deep chestnut with a tight cream head; the aroma has some weak coffee and red fruit; soft and dry in the mouth with a light coffee taste; then a thin, lightly bitter finish with some caramel and coffee, and perhaps a trace of citrus. This didn’t quite do it for me.

Cask at Hamilton Hall, JDW - London. Pours clear, red-brown with a faint, tan film head. Burnt bread in the nose, not much else. Somewhat interesting flavor, some well toasted bread, hints of augary chocolate, light earthy bitterness. Light in body with soft carbonation. Vaguely roasty malt finish, mild char, burnt toast, faint baking cocoa. Shows some promise but just doesn’t follow through.

Mild porter in character. Very black with a a light brown creamy head. Has only a hint of roasted malts in its taste, not much aroma either. Has a pleasant aftertaste.
