Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours hazy gold with a white head. Light stone fruit aroma. Med body. Flavor is light apricot, earthy sox, some wood, and perhaps a hint of chili. It’s rather mild considering the name. Finishes towards horse blanket.

The slightest clouded golden coloured body with a thin white head. Aroma of pale wheat, tons of grapefruit, pineappley and citrusey hops, some earthy notes and a ton of light spice flavours - very nice throughout the smell. Light-bodied; Assertive effervescence; Strong spice kick of white pepper, sage, coriander seed, spruce and hay all with not much malt at all - this tastes more like a gruit with every sip. Aftertaste is very mild with hops and spices coming out - no malt or depth, no strength nor pungency. Overall, a very light offering with a ton of spice and grassy flavours, but not depth, maltiness or earthy flavours at all. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Belmont Station in Portland, Oregon on 27-September-2013 for US$5.50 sampled at home in Washington on the other side of this country on 17-March-2014 on St Patrick’s Day.

Sample at First Sunday. Pours yellow, with a thin, white head. Aroma of lemon zest, straw, grape must, and pine. Very sweet, with some light bitterness and just a touch of sourness. Medium body, sticky, and fairly lively. Not bad!

Super clear, light orange and copper coloured body with a thin, half a centimetre tall just off-white head with almost no movement at all. Aroma of pine, light hops, resin, flowers and a hint of perfumey hops - not much malt or alcohol here at all. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong perfumey and floral hop flavours with not much malt, some light fruity sweetness and a subdued bitterness at the end. Aftertaste shows a little of the hops, but in an odd way - just perfume and flowers, some light malt and not much else - this was fairly weak. Overall, a very sub-standard IPA, especially by PNW standards! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Portland (Pearl), Oregon on 27-April-2013 for US$4.29 sampled at home in Washington on 04-September-2013.

Dark brown coloured body with a light tan head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, caramelised sugars and a good amount of chiles. Medium-bodied; Standard robust porter flavour at first with noticeable roasted malt, chocolate and toffee sweetness and little else. Then, a few seconds later you feel a nice pleasant chile burn on the back of the palate that lasts there for a while but isn’t overwhelming, but provides a nice consistent and warming sensation and adds to the experience. Aftertaste shows a good blend of a porter and a chile infused beer - well done. Overall, a nice beer that should be sampled if you like porters, but especially if you like chiles, since this is a well-balanced beer. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Pearl Specialty Market in Portland, Oregon on 26-April-2013 for US$6.49 sampled at home in Washington on 23-June-2013.

On nitro tap at Bailey's Taproom, pours black with a medium beige head. Aroma of oats and toasted malts. Flavour of smooth oats, mild toasted malts and bitter dry cocoa. Very smooth and drinkable for a stout. The nitro makes this very easily drinkable. Solid stuff, just nothing out of the ordinary.

Billed as a chili porter. Aroma is malty with a spice edge. Flavour is mild restrained malt with a loud chili finish. Dark with an off white head pour. Truly a chili porter.
