My second gooseberry ale this week. Apparently Shakespeare used to drink a lot of Grozet. I like it a lot. Gooseberry adds a very interesting flavor, not sweet but funky.

Cask @ Hengler's Circus in a colourful Glasgow winter. Clear golden with a creamy head. Hoppy aroma, better hoppy taste with a body quite light in texture for its strength.

440ml can. Pours dark gold with a medium head. Aroma is caramel, toast, orange and pine. Taste has marmalade to start with a bitter caramel and pine finish.

440ml can. Pours slightly hazy dull gold with a small head. Aroma is yeasty Fruit Salads. Taste has yeasty tropical fruit and a touch of boiled sweets.

Can (from Alko web). Hazy yellowish golden colour with a small white head. Aroma is ginger, some zest, mild grains and a bit of sugary sweetness. Flavour is ginger, grains, some bready tones with mild sugary tones. A bit like vappusima with lots of ginger to it. Not grandma's weapon strength ginger though.

Bottle from Lidl Supermarket, Todmorden. Hazy amber with a small head. Has a strength, but good fruit found too with a pseudo Belgian styling here.

Can. Just a light haze on this gold beer, not quite as clear as the West Coast but certainly not a polar opposite. Smooth palate, semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Smooth pale malts, a light creamy sweetness. A decent fruity hop profile here. Fairly bright citrus if slightly sweet, candyish tropical fruits. A light and semi dry finish. Again, a good value beer from Aldi. Actually, given this is William's Bros, I should not have been so pessimistic about what these beers would deliver.

Can. Almost clear gold beer, small but tidy pale cream colour head. Airy palate, mildly dry, decent fine carbonation. Light smooth pale malts, clean and just about delivering the right amount of sweetness for this style. Tastes like classic West Coast hopping, I would say Columbus and Cascade but then this style often homogenises hops of all sorts. Bright pine with stronger ripe orange and a light but crisp peel bitterness. A trace of floral orange on the semi dry finish. Not bad, was not expecting much from a cheap Aldi poochase and a West Coaster too boot, but took a chance and glad I did. A tidy brew.
