Description
In 1356, with the decree of the Golden Bul by Emperor Charles IV, the cities in the Holy Roman Empire, including Wittichenau, were granted the right to brew beer. The beer was largely brewed in private, business and trading houses. In Wittichenau a common brewery was founded in 1435, this is considered as the year of foundation of the brewery. In 1940 the brewery was acquired by Eduard Glaab. It is the oldest private brewery in Saxony and has been run as a family business by the Glaabs for three generations now.

Old rating from 2005, out of a 2l-bottle bought at the brewery. Smooth mild yeasty beginning. Fresh with a nice round bitterness, sessionable with a nice yeasty back. Easy to drink with fresh hops on a smooth grainy body. Nice.

500ml bottle [Thanks to Tanja & Verena!]. Clear, dark brown colour with ruby glimmer and average to huge, frothy, diminishing, off-white to beige head. Slightly grainy, dusty dark malty aroma, a touch of malt lozenge. Taste is slightly sweet dark malty, hints of malt lozenge, a touch of dark caramel. Monotonous, a bit anaemic.

Clear deep amber brown colour, small frothy beige head, diminishing slowly, minimal lacing. Aroma sweet malts, caramel, bread. Taste medium sweet and light bitter, malty, toffee, nutty notes. Medium body, watery to oily texture, soft carbonation, light roasty notes in the sweetbitter finish, mediocre amber lager.
