You see, at that time, no one was risking it all starting a brewery, making simple, premium, easy-drinking ale. To do so was an act of defiance. Or madness. But, 42 years and a lot of hard graft later, by staying true to our beliefs and Bristolian roots, it looks like owning a resolutely maverick brewing company isn’t such a crazy idea after all. By going against the grain, to work intimately with it, we made our own statement with every pint. And what was true then is just as important today.
Butcombe now produces over 250,000 pints a week from our brewery in Wrington. As times and tastes change, so does our range of beers. Alongside Original, Gold and Rare Breed, you’ll find two craft lagers, Bohemia and Underfall, and two IPAs, Goram and Stateside, plus a range of exciting seasonal and small batch specials.

Cask-conditioned, on gravity, at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol March 2023. Amber in colour with a slight, off-white, head. A touch of floral hop, jammy citrus notes, hay, crisp and biscuity malts, leading to a dryish finish. Good.

Low carbonation dark amber to red off white head didnt last to long A - toffee caramel hay F - slightly drying dark fruits, toffee, caramel leading to bitter sweet finish really nice bitter. Reminds me a bit of McEwans Export/80 shilling beers. Also had this previously on cask and remember enjoying it

Pours a clear golden to orange colour with a small frothy off-white head. The aroma is light fruit: orange; with some floral hop notes. A moderately sweet taste, sweet malt, light caramel and sweet citrus flavours with a moderate citrusy bitterness.

Bottle from Lidl Supermarket, Todmorden. Clear golden with an extremely thin head. Bland lager taste, although there's a bit more of its style available in its nose. It's soft and easy supping though with grassy elements.

Cask @ Regal Moon, Rochdale. Golden with a creamy head. Hoppy with very fresh tasting piney-citrus notes.

Cask at Square Bottle, Chester. Pours golden amber with a sizeable white head and good lacing. There’s oranges and floral hops in the aroma. In the mouth it is a bit watery with main flavour being the hops plus hints of citrus and pine. Later ther is some bitterness and underlying hints of malts. Finish is slightly sticky. It’s decent enough.

Cask at the Hope Tap, Reading. Clear golden-amber with an off-white head and a light sparkle. Great condition actually. Straw up front, orange and pink grapefruit come through with increasing juiciness. A light malty caramel note gives a good rich mouthfeel. Sweetish and dry finish with a hint of leafy hops. Good stuff actually.
