Tap at Bungalow. Nose of lemon, crackers, a bit of apricot, spicy yeast. Deep, hazy gold. Belgian yeast? Flavors of grapefruit, nice stone fruit, almost tropical, but this is just about ruined by a raunchy, pithy bitterness that makes the finish very harsh. I’m not sure what they were aiming at, but they almost got there.

On tap at Molto. Hideji Whirlwind Oroshi IPA 5.2% 50 IBU It has a nice juicyfruit hop aroma & an almost white pepper edge to it. The taste is a grapefruit pith bitterness with mild pine notes. It’s alright.

A last souvenir from the airport in Miyazaki. Hideji’s Shinkan no Pale Ale 5% it pours an opaque gold with a filmy off-white head. It’s got an earthy citrus hop aroma with an attractive underlying sweetness. Medium bodied with a sandpapery carbonation but good flavor of woodsy citrus and a balanced bitterness. A solidly satisfying pale ale.

Hideji Stout 4.5% Bottle from Miyazaki airport 2nd floor souvenir corner. A seasonal release for about 620¥, drunk while waiting for my take out to be ready. It pours out with a thick viscousity and tan head. Fairly full mouthfeel and roasty chocolate goodness on a velvety body. A lovely roasty oats and cacao aroma. The nicest miyazaki beer I’ve had all trip.

Badass IPL Hideji x Beer Market Base 5% A lovely clear light gold with a thick creamy head of white foam. A nice fruity /floral hop bouquet with a dank edge to it. Light bodied and dry with a sharply bitter finish. The taste is woodsy pine with some fruity sweetness in the aftertaste but mostly a lasting bitterness. A solid IPL.

Bottle from Malt & Vine. Pours dark brown with no head. Aroma is sort of roasty dark malt, chocolate, and maybe some nut. Med + body. Flavor is chocolate, and something that must be chestnut, but it’s not the typical greasy nut in American browns. Lightly spicy too. It’s off the main IS path, but it drinks tastily and nicely. Maybe finishes with a bit of Turbinado sugar. Not a dry finish, but refined and pleasing.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a glowing straw color with a huge soapy white head. Classic wit aromas with banana and clove on the front with a touch of lemon zest. Taste is sweet, but has a slight tart edge to it. Creamy mouthfeel. Pretty good Hoegaarden clone. Would definitely drink again. --- Beer merged from original tick of (Hana no) White Weizen on 03 Nov 2015 at 15:25 - Score: 7

Tap at Takumiya. A bit of a surprise. Orange with brown tints, lovely lace. Malty nsoe, a bit of caramel, earthy hops. Dry, fruity flavor, peaches, oranges, very bitter finish. Body is a bit too full and oily, but overall a nice try. A bit drier would be better tho.

How did this beer from Kyushu with one rating end up in Portland? Well, beervana strikes again! 12 ounce bottle from Uptown Market. Pours a almost jet black color with a medium brown head. A nice chocolate and dark fruit nose. Very sweet, I mean this is huge sugary chestnuts, smoke, ash, lactose, brown sugar. Hmm. Minerals. Very dry in the finish with rich cocoa and chestnut. Interesting. A bit much for me in terms of the dusty dry finish and the overall sugary sweet middle. But it looks awesome and is promising. Hopefully I?ll see more of this brewery.

Bottle from Mitsuya. Pours a murky orange with a small off-white head. Grass, lemon, white pepper and yeast on the nose. Taste is all yeast. Has a cue burn like scratchy taste from first impression through the finish. Way too much yeast. --- Beer merged from original tick of Shinkan no Pale Ale on 18 Oct 2015 at 20:25 - Score: 5
