Description
“life’s too short for crap beer!”

In Spring 2005 Matthew Walley cashed his pension savings (at 33, he figured he shouldn’t need them too soon), spent it all on brewing equipment and set about brewing with mate Terry Ashford without telling anyone.

Driven by our enthusiasm for great beer, Spitting Feathers has continued to grow and evolve into a modern, forward thinking brewery producing exciting beers in keg, cask and bottle.

Farm to Fork! Spitting Feathers Brewery is based at Common Farm in Waverton, and is proud to be sustainable. The used grains from the brewery are a valuable feed for the cattle and pigs that provide the brewery and our pubs with meat. Bee hives behind our staff bar (where trial brews are drunk and argued over) provide honey for our pubs and seasonal beer, Honey Trap. Small amounts of hops are also grown on the farm for use in occasional/special beers.

Straw blond colour. A balanced malty golden ale with a strange (but not unpleasant) hint of broad beans. Not particularly wheaty or Christmassy though.

Hand-pulled half-pint in The Crown, Oakengates: 19th Nov 13. Pours a good solid, deep, dark brown, on top a tanned foaming head. Over roasted malts rule the nose: coffee with dark fruits on a chocolate bar. The taste was also leaning towards a coffee flavour with again dark fruit and chocolate notes: dry and semi-bitter finish. OK, there are some good Stouts out there at the moment, add this to your list of ones to try.

Gravity cask at the Wandsworth Common Halloween Beer Festival - Le Gothique, London. Pours clearish brown with a fine, tan foam head. Nice roasted coffee aroma. Light sweet flavor with moderate roast, more coffee, light bitterness, mocha, mild burnt rubber. Light to medium in body with fine carbonation. Moderately sweet to finish with dry chocolate, fine roast, some earthy coffee. Good.

Half pint, cask by handpump at Ye Cracke. Misty, golden body. Filmy layer, fragile lacing. Dry lemony hops to the nose. Taste of juicy malts as well as hints of peaches and grapefruits. Bittersweet finish. Likable, not too thin (Liverpool, 09.04.2013).

Cask at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham Green, 07/04/13. Clear amber with reddish hues topped with a thin off white head. Nose is vegetal, malt, pea soup - urgh ! Taste improves slightly but not a lot ! Tea leaves, light toffee, vegetal. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation lending towards a dry finish. Left half of my half - unbalanced veggy mess!

Cask at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham Green, 12/01/13. Hazed reddish brown with a good sized off white head. Nose is pretty bland, cardboard and paper, pale malt, light sugars, trace of fruit. Taste holds a little more depth, caramel, toffee, little grass. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and some dry bitterness in the finish. Not one to revisit !

Black, large ruby edges, dense beige head, good lacing

Taste of dark caramel malts, soft roast, dark toffee, no burnt toast, dark fruits
Palate - Medium body, smooth, rich. Finish of dark malts, some soft roast
Overall - Nice soft easy stout

Cask @ Ye Cracke, Liverpool 040112 7/3/7/3/14
Very dark ruby brown. dense white head, some lacing
Aroma - Fruity dark malts, tad vinous
Taste of roasted malts, quite a lot of roast but quite fruity too, some roast coffee, red berries, chocolate, a touch vinous, tasty beer
Palate - Medium body, smooth. Finish of fruity chocolate, dry linger, bit too dry
Overall - Decent stout with that fruitness, not sure if it’s supposed to have that vinous edge but finish a bit too dry for me
