Bottle at C’est What, Toronto
Hazy red-amber color; small head. Nice aroma of caramel and hops, a bit sweaty. Good toffee flavor; the mouthfeel is lean, no crystal; strong bitterness, providing nice orangey resins, and a tea final. Long end.
Very good, powerful but easy to drink.

Thanks, Doug! Hazy orangey-amber. The aroma is a chewy, oxidized hop. I think as an XI this is from 2011, so it’s been aged a bit. The palate is actually a bit light and soft, though with some chewy crystal and oxidized hop character. There’s a touch of alcohol in the finish. Fits the style.

A dark reddish brown ale with a thin dark off white head. In aroma, a smooth fruity biscuit malt with floral and pungent hops, orange pulp and dark fruits. In mouth, a smooth roasted malt with piney hops, white grapefruits, nice and smooth. On tap at Session 99, June 23, 2012.

a lot of these saisons ive been having recently in this Ontario saison wave have tasted dangerously close to lagers. This smells a touch like hay, a touch like barley. Theres at least a little bitter follow through, nice and grassy. Pours golden lager, slight lacing. At least it gets a little better as it goes. On tap at barvolo

Smells like mild hops, a little bitterness. Looks kind of ruby black with some lacing. No fruit, no citrus, no nothing. Just bitter. Not sure where the abbey comes into this. It’s just a low to average American IPA. Not even much roast that you would expect in a BIPA. On tap at barVolo.

Had this right after the Nickel Brook saison and it pales in comparison. Not nearly the complexity. Smell is hard to pick out but theres some soft wheat reminiscent of a bad hefeweizen. Lacing is good as well as head retention. Taste holds bitterness and a little sourness but a pretty light palate. Tap at volos.

Opaque black beer. Nose of chocolate and wood. Light palate. Dark malt. Wood comes through loud and clear. Light unsweet chocolate with fairly subtle but sour cherry. Finishes dry. The name sounds promising, the beer is a bit of a let down. Okay but nothing special.
