Description
The first real Cretan beer was a result of Dr Bernd Brink, a German mathematician based in Scotland. He came to Crete and, as a German might, wanted to bring to the island above all a genuine German beer. So the Rethymnian Brewery was set up.

Cretan made organic beer from the town Rethymnon. Comes in 330ml swingtop bottle found in the refrigerator at the supermarked IN.KA, Platanias, Crete (BB. Oct.06). A little more expensive than other beers - about 1,30 Euro. Gives a shot and some smoke when opened. Dark straw yellow leading to an amber colour topped with a hazy, rocky head. Light hoppy nose. The fruity flavours are improving after some while in the glass. Solid dry finish. Soothing and gentle in sunny Crete. A bit strange that I could not find bars and restaurants in Chania or Platantias that had this "local" beer on the menu (30.05.2006).

330ml swingtop bottle bought at the supermarked IN.KA in Platanias, Crete. Non filtered, unpasteurized, organic beer made in Rethymnon, the third (?) largest city on Crete (BB: Oct. 06). Pale yellow, vaguely hazy. Quickly disappearing foam. Weak aromatic profile of fruit. Hints of apple and cirtus in a rather light rounded taste - flavours are improving after a while in the glass. Refreshing and easy drinkability. Good amount of sediments at the bottom (30.05.2006).

(Bottle 33 cl) Pretty, reddish amber with a small, crudely structured head. Slightly hazy with a small sediment. Dry, malty character with a light earthy and fusty note - although not unpleasantly so. Dry finish without much bitternes. Unusual. 110705

(Bottle 33 cl) In a swing-top bottle - that’s gotta be a first for Greece. Very pale golden, slightly hazy with a fine, white head that leaves a small lacing. Looks like a Belgian witbier if you pour the last half inch. Pronounced floating impurities and a solid yeast sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Not really your typical lager. Well, this is both organic and brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot. Fresh, slightly sweet malty nose with some fruity notes of apple - rather unusual. Fresh lightly hopped finish. Thanks to sweet Alice for bringing me this. 070705
