The first real Cretan beer was a result of Dr Bernd Brink, a German mathematician based in Scotland. He came to Crete and, as a German might, wanted to bring to the island above all a genuine German beer. So the Rethymnian Brewery was set up.

Bottle at home bought at a Bio store near my home. Pours yellow with no head. Heavily particulate, thin bodied, poor palate. Slight aromas of malt, mostly cereal and herbs. Light presence of hops, mostly grass and herbs. Taste is similar, with dry finish and slightly bitter-sweet aftertaste. I’ve had it many times in the past, it’s an ok brew but nothing that special. I do prefer it to commercial beers, and I appreciate their following the German Purity Law.

Copper color with a fizzy tan head and average lace. Light caramel and bready malt aroma. Medium sweet, minimal bitterness. Lively to fizzy carbonation. Slightly watery/thin. Decent, but the Blonde is better in style.

Bottle at the Alcanea hotel, Crete. Hazy deep amber coloured beer, small pale cream coloured head. Palate is light and dry with modest fine carbonation. Semi sweet malts, touch of caramel. Sourish dried fruits, the same as the blonde. Dry finish. Meh!

Bottle at the Alcanea hotel, Crete. Very hazy pale gold beer, small white head. Palate is dry.and crisp. Very dusty grainy malt. Sourish dried fruits. A touch of sherbet zing saves it from complete disaster. Dry finish.
