Bottle. Deep red with a beige head that’s soon a fat coat. 3+ Woody aroma with fresh bark as well as oak, dark honey, prunes, leather. Lighter bodied and not as sweet as suggested by the aroma. Honey, somewhat astringent wood. Lemony, peppery honey finish with some bitterness. Pretty good, interesting. Grew on me as it warmed from about 12C.

From bottle. Black and thick on pour. Strong burnt coffee notes on nose. Packs a punch in all the right ways. Bitterness counterbalances the coffee very well to avoid wet coffee ground trap.

Pint on tap at Three Crowns, North Melbourne. Clear pale amber beer with thin white head. Very light carbonation. Nose is sweet and grainy. Full body, light fizz. Taste and finish is sweet with late sourness. Drinkable but missing a lot of the graininess I would expect to find in a Pils.

Bottle, 7% ABV. Dark brown with a pale beige head. Aroma has roast, molasses and licorice some way underneath rather soapy citrus and some spices. Just about medium bodied, quite fizzy. Taste follows the aroma - the hops dominate and are somewhat soapy, and the citrus is too much anyway. Some menthol. Not a blend for me.

It’s categorised as a fruit beer on rate beer, but when opening the bottle, expect a slightly peach flavoured pale ale. The aromas are peach, lemon, biscuit and honey and the taste is much more lemony with the peach coming through late across the roof of my mouth. It could do with more malt structure and the aftertaste is very warm as if it’s more alcoholic than it is. Enjoyable.

Bottle. Black with a wisp of tan head. Aroma of good bittersweet chocolate ( the sort where the sugars are a bit singed), moderate roast, some dark rum (an Australian stout thing for some reason), slight earthiness (seems to be a Cavalier thing and I don’t love it). Barely medium bodied, lowish carbonation. The aroma suggested bittersweet chocolate but there’s not much sweetness - bitter chocolate, roasted flavours that are really only supporting, a finish that dries out even further and is quite bitter. This is an elegant and intense chocolate stout and my favourite Cavalier beer since the first and fabulous batch of their hefeweizen. 7384 16
