Description
Commonwealth Brewing Co was founded as the manifestation of one family’s love for making uncompromising, exceptional beer and sharing the experiences with friends. The spark of inspiration was ignited during a revelatory European brewery and beer hall tour while Jeramy was visiting Natalie, who was traveling (aka wandering) abroad for two years. But it wasn’t until 2013, after years of stove top excellence, beer geekery and a house too full of brewing equipment, that it was time to fully embrace the craft beer lifestyle.

Commonwealth opened Sept 6, 2015 as a result of next level commitment, mild insanity, family, friends and a profound sense of purpose. Since then, we’ve grown into a tight knit band of like minded people who believe beer should be adventurous, diverse, extremely drinkable, and defy boundaries. We honor farmhouse traditions, huge hop American styles, and the complex depths of wild fermentations.

Located inside a fully renovated, former fire and rescue station built in 1962 and nestled in a funky beach cottage community (flip flops mandatory) on the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia Beach, our facility is complete with a double garage bay tasting room, private event spaces, an outdoor beer garden, and a conditioned barrel cellar housing hundreds of barrels of mixed fermentations for long term aging.

Can at the July DC RB mini-tasting. Poured a golden yellow color with a medium-small white head. Aroma was pleasant tropical fruits, passion fruit. Flavor was similar, kind of a fruit forward beer, not a lot of salty character in this one.

Can, date obscured, but freshly arrived in stores, drunk 6/8/18.
Soupy dark bronze with a white head fading quickly to a ring.
Lime-coconut-like notes are the first thing to note, in the nose, and seem a bit odd, but perhaps it's just the ester mixing in. Rich honey and dough-like malts behind it more than balances. Pine and grapefruit are quite strong on the end. A bit of alcohol/resin sneaks in there.
In the mouth, it's decidedly bitter, resinous and piney with tons of grapefruit and hard orange rind. Wow, what the hell happened here?? Vic Secret has always come off soft, juicy and full of melon and tangerine. There's little/none of that here, but they've certainly got the bitter, resinous, hard pine covered. Malty enough texture and tight carbonation, with appropriate attenuation, but just brutally bitter, resinous and hard, white grapefruit and pine doing nothing of interest or enjoyment for the palate.

Canned 6/1, drunk 6/8/18.
Soupy bronze-maize with a white head fading quickly to a ring.
Oh ya...zesty spice with pineapple juice, rich honey-like malts and tons of tropical fruit. Mango-lime character persists on the finish with no resin but a touch of grapefruit and light pine for balance.
Fairly substantial bitterness rides on the back of lime and grapefruit. It's soft, malty and dry, as every Commonwealth beer I've ever had has been. Bit strong on the PNW hop character (citrus, pine) but spicy capsaicin and juicy tropical fruits do help ward it off. Perfect texture makes things soft and drinkable, as well. Spice, bitterness and light pine lingers.

Can, with illegible date, drunk 5/24/18.
Heavily hazy, copper-to-golden. Large, full, well-retained, white head.
Nose is papaya, marmalade and lemon with a bit of vegetal-like Mosaic character (scallion/garlic). Peppery and not all that bright, though with cracker and light biscuit not disturbing the hops.
In the mouth, it continues with the bad veggie-scallion Mosaic character, but otherwise shows perfect carbonation, malt texture, attenuation and bitterness. No resin, no alcohol, no flaw. Man these guys are great. Scallion burns off a bit as it progresses leaving lime, pine and light honey in its wake. For a simcoe-mosaic-style IPA, which I never have very high hopes for, this is quite amazing (minus the scallion, of course). Looking at the commercial description, I see it's Equinox El Dorado, which I don't usually get a lot of vegetal/scallion from, though still don't particularly care for.
