Description
Charlottesville’s original brewery located one block off the downtown mall.
Welcome to the rebirth of Charlottesville’s longest-running brewery and pub! South Street Brewery was purchased in 2014 by Blue Mountain Brewery, whose owners have a deep connection with this storied brewing establishment. Two of Blue
Mountain’s founders—Mandi and Taylor Smack—both worked for South Street over a decade ago, Taylor having been the brewer from late 2001 until early 2007. Our company is
committed to maintaining and revitalizing this important Charlottesville landmark and gathering place.
We hope you enjoy our expanded beer offerings, including venerated South Street originals that helped shape the Central Virginia beer scene, as well as new beers reflecting the diversity and experimentation that is the heart of American craft brewing.

Admin Note: Originally established in 1998, South Street Brewery was purchased by Blue Mountain Brewery owners Taylor and Mandi Smack in 2014. Taylor Smack brewed at South Street Brewery for 5 years before founding Blue Mountain.

Super hazy golden and honey coloured body with a very nice two centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of oats (no surprise), grain, alcohol, earthy and piney hops coupled with sohme light sugars and a bit of grain. Full-bodied; Strong malt flavour up front with a lot of bitterness, some earthy and pungent cloying flavours that show some sweetness, a touch of fruit and a little pie flavours as well. Aftertaste shows the hop bitterness which ranges from earthy to super herbal and pungent, to the point of cloying. Overall, a rich beer (from the oats of course) that shows a bit lighter and contrary to most beers, at 7,7% seems a bit LESS in alcohol than I was expecting from the flavour (which is why, when I look at MY bottle, it shows 9,07% abv - which seems MUCH more accurate). Overall, an interesting beer that is executed fairly well and is well worth drinking (especially in the small format) if you can find it and like iPAs! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Fair Lakes (Fairfax), Virginia on 16-February-2016 for US$1,99 sampled at home in Washington on 23-September-2016.

Keg at the brewpub, 3/19/16. Hazy amber, large creamy white head, good retention. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla and caramel. The taste is bourbon, caramel, vanilla, oak, toasted malt. Medium bodied, bland. If someone were to set out to make a completely generic barrel aged beer, this would be it.
