Description
Owner Kyle Funk and his brother-in-law Jon Norman (Norm) are partners in Funk Brewing Co. which began brewing in 2014. Wether it’s Nirvana, Apple, or Funk, all great things start in a garage. Both Norm and Kyle started brewing in their garages with a turkey fryer and Igloo cooler. Later, Kyle’s and his mechanical engineering background built a magnificent brew house from scratch in his garage.

With Kyle’s brewing ability and Norm’s business background it made sense to start a brewery. The duo went to the Colorado Boy Brewing Company brewery school in Ridgway CO. After being laughed out of a few banks they were finally given a loan and the keys to 19 South 6th Street in Emmaus.

Since 2014, Funk has grown to 2 taprooms (Emmaus and Elizabethtown) and a distribution footprint of 7 states in the Mid Atlantic.

Can at home picked up in Dawson Market, Washington DC, 24th March 23. Pours a dark amber and clear ale, form white head. Aroma is resinous pine, burnt caramel. Taste is classic old school west coast, resinous, sticky pine, bitter citrus. Nice bitter linger. Lovely

Relatively strong and rich, 80 per cent opaque deep copper and brown coloured body with a lighter bronze glow, but still pretty hazy, especially for the style, with a thinnish, single centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of squash, brown sugars, some toffee, a bit of light earthiness with a dash of yeast here, but the squash richness comes out for sure, in the nose at a minimum. Medium to Full-bodied; Very strong squash and caramelised sugar notes show at first with a good dash of allspice and light canella flavours come through with a little dryness from the malts, but the toffee sweetness on the end is enjoyable, as are the squash flavours which hit very nicely and mellow this out. Aftertaste shows a good malt character with some noticeable sweet flavours from the caramel and toffee with some additional sugars from the squash itself, but a lot of richness and malt qualities come from the squash, too, of course. Overall, a nice beer that has some good flavours from the squash, but the richness it provides and the sugars alongside this make this very nice and enjoyable - recommended if you can find it, even in Winter! I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-size can, purchased from GlenRo Spirit Shoppe in Monroe, Connecticut on 25-November-2022 for US$3,99, part of Batch #2599 (from bottom of can), sampled in my hotel room here in Orlando, Florida with my wife and three kids on 28-December-2022.

16 oz. can. Aroma is rich chocolate with mild vanilla. The flavor follows course with chocolate , vanilla and a nice full thick body. A little bit of chocolate or coffee bitterness round it out. Can’t find the strawberry any place. All thing considered, good.

Very nice, pretty hazy golden and lightly copper tinted body with a thinnish, funky and large-bubbled off-white head that fades pretty quickly and leaves nothing on the sides. Aroma of very strong lemon, artificially so, with a lot of caster sugar and even icing sugar notes along with some moderate biscuity malt notes - strong in the nose, and mostly [fake] lemony. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong artificial lemon flavours dominate up front that make a path for some lighter biscuity and even grainy malts with some cleaner wheat notes further back, but the lemon and relatively strong sweetness punch through and leave this very refreshing. Aftertaste shows some enjoyable lemon and crisp malt notes that make this go down easily, sort of a like a lightly alcoholised, fizzy lemonade, as the style is intended for. Overall, a pretty nice Radler that is on the border to be a Shandy, and enjoyable aside from one thing - how artificial the lemons taste here - they are strong and refreshing (think Country Time Lemonade), but a bit too funky. Great to try, especially on one of the last hot days here in 2022 (hopefully). I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from the Department of Beer and Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 24-July-2020 for US$3,59 sampled at my house here in Washington on 06-November-2022.

Can pour. It's a hazy light brown-golden yellow with tons of sparkle, 2-finger width off-white foamy head with excellent retention and nice soapy lacing. Aroma is strong stone fruit, lemon, milder pine and pale malt. Taste is strong stone fruit, orange, late lemon (bordering on industrial solvent) and base malt. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with smooth, thick texture, average carbonation and crisp finish as taste. Overall, aroma and flavor are strong but a little off. Not sure how old can is (minimum 3 months) so hops may have dropped off--comes off as more DIPA than double hazy.

Can from Food Dog, pale straw, decent head. Very light grain paper lager nose. Slightly sweet on the tongue, malty with a hint of grain and earthy hops. Not exciting but better than most pale lagers.

Rocky white head left a spotty cover on a chill hazy clear golden coloured body. Zesty, earthy & metallic aroma. Medium bodied, foamy on the tongue with a sharp dry back. Bitter, citrus, pithy, grapefruit & earthy tastes with a tangy finish. Clean & refreshing - Good One!
