Description
Established in 1719, Belhaven is Scotland’s oldest working brewery. With abundant local barley, fine water from the brewery well and access to markets up and down the coast, Belhaven was the perfect place for a brewery back then, and it still is today. In 1719, Dunbar market gardener John Johnstone erected a brewery close to Belhaven Bay and founded a brewing dynasty which was to last for 250 years and a brewery which would last much longer. The brewery and maltings persevered through the wars and upheavals of the early 20th Century and was eventually sold by John Johnstone’s descendants in 1972. In 2005 is was taken over by Greene King who kept the Brewery open in Scotland.

bottle - Pours copper with a good sized white head that laces nicely. It has a mild hoppy aroma and hints of some kind of fruit that I couldn’t place. It tastes moderately hoppy with malt and mild fruit notes. The balance is nice. I was puzzled to taste what seemed to be some alcohol in the finish, which seemed odd for the low ABV. Medium bodied and good for sessions, this is a pretty good quaff.

Bottle, 4.2%. Weak malty aroma. Clear brown colour, stable light brown head. Slightly smoky flavour, otherwise a bit sweet. The sweetness is too sugary for my liking.

(Bottle 50 cl) Clear, pale amber golden with a white head. Lightly citrusy aroma. Fairly light-bodied. Some malt but overwhelmingly dominated by fairly dry and citric hops that leave a solid dose of bitterness. 080107

Poured a transparent copper color with a foamy, lacing white head. Malty aroma, very little hops. Flavor was sweet, with notes of caramel and butter. Finish is only slightly bitter and very smooth. Highly drinkable.
