Rough around the edges for a big imperial stout, heavy on the boozy warmth with an aggressive sweetness lacking nuance. Bittersweet chocolate and coffee dominate, with a sturdy bitterness on the back end that keeps it from growing cloy. The dark fruit notes lean too tart, though, with an unripe cherry tang clashing with anise and raisin notes. Abrasive finish comes mostly from the alcohol. Probably will improve with age, but a bit harsh now.

12oz can, foamed hard, then poured a lightly hazy yellow with some sudsy white head. Nose is lemon, a little industrial, yogurt, a little white wine vinegar. Flavor is simple, lemon, light vinegar, a little butter. Tart finish.

Sample at the brewery. Nice, cloudy ruby-brown color, with crap-tons of foam (but that was probably the idle tap line, not the beer). The nose is bready malts, black tea, and caramel. The flavor is malty, but relatively dry, with not much hop bitterness, and a touch of roastiness. Medium body, grainy, and thick. This is a nice, easy Irish ale. Great malt character, and a unique flavor.

Sample at the brewery. Pale yellow color, with a big, frothy, off-white head. The nose is sharp mandarin oranges, apricots, butterscotch, and lemon zest. the flavor is sweet and citrusy, with an aggressive sourness. Medium body, very acidic, crisp, and surprisingly smooth. This is a wonderfully tasty, fruity, and tart beer. The apricots give this a smooth and creamy mouthfeel, and the souring is perfect for the base beer. I’d highly recommend this.
