Description
The Shed Brewery has been a Vermont staple for nearly 50 years. The original building on Mountain Road in Stowe was built in 1830 as a blacksmith shop. It later served as a cider mill and local gathering spot for Stowe farmers. During harvest, the local farmers would drop off their harvested apples and stay for a drink of hard cider and spirited conversation.

After a short stint as a variety store and youth hostel, the old cider mill became The Shed Restaurant in 1965. Spirited conversation returned in the form of tall tales of downhill glory as skiers filled the Shed and set the roots for the après ski culture in Stowe. Steeped in history and rooted in Vermont skiing lore, the Shed became THE spot for locals and tourists alike.

On a frigid evening in 1994, a fire destroyed the restaurant. Rising from the ashes, the restaurant reopened the following year with the addition of a seven-barrel brewery that focused on English-style, handcrafted ales. The Shed Mountain Ale soon became as steeped in Stowe folklore as the ski area up the road.

One of the first brewpubs in Vermont, the Shed's tradition of brewing fine ales remained part of Stowe's culture until 2011 when production shifted to Middlebury. Now, for the first time in our storied history, people outside of Vermont are able to enjoy Shed at their neighborhood bars and restaurants or pick up a six-pack from their local store. The legacy of the original Shed lives on in every batch of Mountain Ale, IPA and the spirited conversation that erupts over a shared pint.

Slightly hazy amber color, steady small off-white head, some lace. Medium-bdoied. Citrusy hoppy flavor, grapefruity, some fruity backing maltyness. Fresh and easy going.

Pours red with ok head and lacing. Some barrel, some booze. Finishes sweet and bitter, wooden. Light palate, not a lot of integration here. On tap at Reservoir.

Bottle. Pours hazy golden, small white head, decent lacing. Aroma is caramel, cardboard, pine, brown sugar. flavor is floral, medium sweet, light bitter, bad. Medium body. Nooooooooo.

Bottle split at Tony’s house, 19/05/13. Dark amber/chestnut brown with a thin beige head. Nose is dark malts, caramel, hint of biscuit. Taste comprises toffee, malt, bready dough, sugars. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, some bitterness in the finish. A little on the dull side, drinkable none the less.

Tap at Max Burger, Longmeadow, 18/05/13. Hazed golden amber with a thin white head, good lacing ensues. Nose is pale malts, hops, grass, citrus, bitter orange, light piss. Taste comprises orange pith, hops, light pine needle, grass, citrus. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, light hop bitterness in the finish. Entry level IPA.

Drought. Reddish brown with beige foamy head, no specifi aroma I could detect, mellow roasted malt taste, average carbonation, long finish with a hint of coffee in it. Good with chili.

First shed I’ve tasted, here’s to you muzzlehatch. On tap at the bocktown. Look is darker brown but not real dark. Barely any aroma. Quite strong on the first taste. Much stronger than anticipated. Yes, seems to kick you back in your seat. Bitterness builds on the sides and back of your tongue but not like ipa. Even seems to be a little viscous towrds the end.

Bottle at Sander’s place, NYC. Poura hazy red-brown with a fine, creamy head. Some sugary bread in the nose, brown sugar. Big sweet flavor, dried berries, bread. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Light warming finish, brown sugar, bready malts, light earthy bitterness, a bit of earth. OK.

Brown with ruby highlights and a tan head. Aroma is malty, light roasted, chocolate, and fruity. Flavor is sweet malts, chocolate, lightly roasted malts. Not a lot of complexity but seriously easy to drink. Not sure if I’d pick up a sixer, but a pint at the bar isn’t out of the question.

It poured a dark brown and gave the same color body. A light yet creamy, half inch, white foamy head lasted for about a minute before gently dieing into the body. Some lacing lightly speckled the sides of the glass. The smell had robust coffee flavorings up front combined nicely with some caramels and malts. Some light coffee came out as the beer warmed. The taste took these flavorings and added a nice warming sweetness. The palate was about a medium with a nice smoothness all around. A semi-dry aftertaste came out just a bit. This was very drinkable. Overall, this was pretty good.
