Description

(Draught at Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 29 Feb 2020) Hazy golden colour with frothy, white head. Malty, fruity nose with grain, white bread, citrus and flowers. Malty, fruity taste with notes of citrus, grainy malt, flowers and a mild herbal bitterness. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Tasty and well balanced. Quite nice.

‘Herfstbok’ from a Dutch beer company I never heard of before, from a 75 cl shared by Craftmember, cheers! Open and loosely knit, mousy, pale greyish beige head, clear purple-tinged burgundy-copper robe. Aroma of hard caramel candy, candi sugar, old raisins, candied figs, sugared tea, peanuts, hazelnut oil, cloves, hint of old straw. Sweet onset, some residual candi sugar, otherwise clean with dried cranberry and candied fig hints, supple body, fizzy carbonation. Somewhat resinous hard-caramelly and lightly peanutty and even very lightly toasty-bitterish maltiness, bit thinnish even for a regular Bock, tea-ish herbal hop bitter note in the end, bit bittersweet in all but with more emphasis on sweetness than on bitterness. The name means something like ‘supreme Bock’, but in reality, this is just your run-of-the-mill, standard Dutch ‘donkerbok’ for the coming of the dark days of the year; it does not stand out among all those other Dutch ‘herfstbokken’, but admittedly it shows no technical flaws – not that I was expecting any from a beer apparently brewed at Jopen.
