Description

Special edition of Enfant Terriple, Leite's standard tripel, infused with Belgian whisky from Filliers (which does not mean a whole lot in the whisky world, frankly speaking). Bottle from the Delhaize supermarket at the Watersportbaan in Ghent. Huge, foamy, stable, egg-white, cobweb-lacing, frothy head on a misty deep ochre-hued golden beer. Aroma of whisky but in a 'peppery' and herbal way (more gin- or jenever-like to be honest) dominating over freshly baked bread and wet bread crumbs, coriander seed, Poire William or even triple sec (probably just that Filliers whisky again), moist white pepper, paprika powder, banana peel, cow fodder, grain husks, dry earth, fried zucchini. Sweetish onset but very restrainedly so for the style, some light pear, banana and apple peel notes, quickly drying though, with sharp, bit stingy carbonation and full, somewhat 'fluffy' mouthfeel. Old bread- and cereal-like pale maltiness with a touch of wet rusk under phenolic clove-like spiciness along with coriander, but very low in residual sugariness, drying even more into a florally hopped, mildly bitter finish where in the end the booze takes over completely, over a bed of earthy dead yeast powderiness. The whisky, not the most elegant in its class, leaves a wry, peppery, warm astingency in the back of the mouth, scorching away the beery features. Unpleasant ending of an unusually dry, but frankly also somewhat 'arid' tripel. This is a very good example of what I dislike about this liquor infused craze in Belgian strong ales: it is lazy (beating around the bush of actual barrel ageing which yields far more interesting results), usually unbalanced, crude and uninspired. Not my thing - even apart from the fact that in general, boozy tripels are not quite my thing to begin with...

Clear orange blond beer, big creamy off-white head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: very malty, grains, hay, cow fodder, herbal notes, a little floral. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty bitter start, malty, metallic, some citrus, grassy, dry. Aftertaste: very hoppy, bitter, grains, herbal, grassy, metallic, decent N/A beer. Not great.
