Description

Bottle from the Grumpy Goat, Reading. Deep gold with a thin white head and a moderate fizz. Funky farmyard summer fruits (raspberry and strawberry), followed by tart lemon, smooth vanilla and dry oak. Very interesting; full-flavoured and punchy and yet smooth and nicely balanced at the same time. A few weeks ago I criticised Stillwater's Oude Bae as I didn't feel that the sourness went with the vanilla notes from barrel-ageing; in this beer it works well though. Really enjoyed this one. Happy days!

Gushing to good, slowly receding white-transparant head over hazy orangey-yellow beer. Phenolic nose, sourish too, bit mineral, sour, unripe fruit aromas. Again bit smoked going to light-phenolic; somewhat woody and a fine trait of booze - not necessarily whisky (blind, I'd guessed jenever). Faintly spicy and definitely sourish. Light body, spritzy carbonation, long-lasting flavours. In the whole series of four, one thing is repeated: with the exception of the sourishness, the marking features are all too modest, not daring enough.

Bottle at Cambrinus in Brugge. Hazy go,den orange, high, rocky head. Very fruity nose, peaches, ap0les, light melon and mango. Mostly from the yeast. Very fruity, almost juicy. Start sweet but dries out nicely, with dried mango and apricots and a bit of tartness. Slightly prickly and bitter finish. Pretty good tripel.

0.33 l bottle from 'belgiuminabox.com', best before February 2019, cellared for a year. Clear, amber with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, white head. Slightly sweetish, sourish, quite fruity and slightly funky aroma of lemon, gooseberry, some vinegar, a touch of barnyard and hints of glue. A little sweet, medium sour, fairly fruity and a little funky taste of lemon, gooseberry, vinegar, quince, some wood, a touch of barnyard and traces of glue, followed by a medium long, quite tart, gently dry, vinegary and slightly woody finish. Medium body, gently astringent and moderately effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. A bit too much vinegar for my liking, the glue doesn't really bother me though. Other than that an intriguing beer with enough residual sweetness and a balanced acidity.

Small just off-white head over fully hazy pale yellow beer with a faint green sheen. End of bottle serious UFO collection. Sourish nose, fruitacids (lemon, peach, nectarine,..), bit lactic, bit farmyard odours, young wood. Quite sour, but with a spicy sweetness in the finish. Fruity, impossible to specify. Very dry, nearly wry, spritzy carbonated feel. Light body. There is fruitiness, but it is nowhere exuberant, a bit too demure even, IMHO.

Small white head, over audibly very well-carbonated hazy yellow beer. Quite vinous nose, white wine with extra acidity. Faint smoked malt, bit mineral aroma. Light-phenolic, light sour flavour; lemon, lactic acid, malonic acid, fruitacids. Bit sulphur, not much left of the vinosity from the nose. LIght body, feels near fizzy. More original take, but not for the fainthearted (then again, compared to some USA sours...)

Despite slow gushing, only medium, if stable snowwhite head over fully hazy yellow beer. Pale malts, herbs, gouache paint; faintly sourish aroma. More of the same (especially the gouache) but with an extra (hop)bitterness; dry and herbal, nettles. Again just a faint point of acidity, wheatsourness, and other (dry) grains. Quite dry - or did I say that already? - bit gristslick. Head is unbelievably stable and very bitter. Better than the sum of its parts.
