Description
Berghoff’s history as a beer brand goes back over 120 years, and in that time it has developed a reputation of high quality and consistency. The first batch of Berghoff beer was brewed in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1887 by Herman Berghoff and his three brothers. Herman’s desire to expand the market for the family’s beer led him to sell the product at the Chicago World’s Fair where it received high acclaim. Since then, Berghoff has continued its success and relevance in the Chicago market and beyond.

As the craft beer market has evolved, the brand has received fresh, exciting updates. Berghoff changed its brewing location and is now proudly brewed at Point Brewery in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Berghoff has also refreshed itself with updated recipes and packaging. With consulting from brewing experts Randy Mosher and John Hannafan, Berghoff’s new, top-notch beers are ready to satisfy consumer demand. As the brewery looks to the future, Berghoff beer will continue to evolve as trends change, but will always maintain its roots as an authentic German-style brew whose history and tradition will never be forgotten

Draft at the Berghoff, and served in a shaker with a lemon slice. Oh, well. Cloudy with a thick, sudsy white head. Smells of citrus even after I took out the lemon wedge. Definite scent of some hefeweizen esters as well, a little more than their regular hefe. Quite a spice taste up front, with some tropical fruit following. And I get more cinnamon than coriander. There’s even a hint of tequila.

Pours amber with a slight orange tint....short, off-white head. Bready, peppery aroma. Caramel, spice, cloying fruit, apple-peel.... Sweet and malty.... APA? I think not.

Draft at the Berghoff bar. The pour produces a nice foamy head over a golden lager color, edging slightly toward a pale ale orange. The smell actually put me in mind of German noble hops, with some English in the background. That’s in the taste as well, although the hop seems to be knocked off its perch by a sweeter malt profile than I’d expect. After a little more, I decide the hops are the equal of the malt after all, but they don’t quite harmonize.

Draft at the Berghoff Bar. Quite different from their previous hefeweizen. Not too cloudy (and served here WITHOUT a wedge). Amber to brown, somewhat clearer than the usual unfiltered wheat. Smell cover mostly a slightly spicy wheat nose and definite German hops. Taste brings out the wheat malt, and only further in do we get a hint of banana and clove esters. Focus is on the noble hops, and they are fully represented. Darn good wheat beer all around, with plenty of Old World charm.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a clear pale gold with minimal head. Aroma of corn and honey with some sweet pale malt. Taste is light bitter. Herbal hops with with a little sweet malt. Light bodied with a thin and very slightly sticky texture. Fizzy carbonation but a long finish. Overall, not bad. Quality has definitely improved since the move to point brewery.

Draft pint at the Berghoff Bar. New version reformulated by Randy Mosher and now brewed at Stevens Point. Now at 6.2% abv. I picked up a bit of spicy rye in the nose right away. Deep reddish brown color under a thin head. The palate holds on to that rye spice, and the malts stay to the light side. Advertised PN hops seem more like their peppery European cousins. Then again, I’m drinking this after a plate of Thai food with extra Sriacha. Caramel roast malt provides a canvas for the rye and spice to play.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a clear copper with a half finger of off-white head. Aroma of sickly sweet cotton candy and green apple. Taste is medium sweet. Sugar, green apples and brown. Light bodied with a sticky texture. Lively carbonation and a long sweet finish. Overall, meh. Too sweet for my taste.

Hazy Yellow, Good Head, Some Lacing. Citrus Smell. Light Citrus and Wheat Sour. Real Easy, Refreshing in hot weather. Might be the best out of this sample pack. On second thought, I might be slightly bias, since this is my favorite beer style. Overall: Decent.

A shade darker Copper, Good Head, Some Lacing. Same as others from sample pack, lacks flavor sharpness. Bland and subdued. Tastes Malty, Light Bitter and finishes little sour. Enjoyed it the least from this sample pack. Drinkable, but meh... Pass it....

Dark Brown, Good Head, Some Lacing. Lightly Toasted, Light Bitter and Malty. Bland, all flavors come as one dimensional and subdued. Should be sharper and have"more balls". As is, is boring and forgettable.
