Description
Kleiburg is the beer of the Klei Monastery: a spiritual and hospitable place in the Amsterdam Bijlmer neighbourhood. We are a social enterprise and are inspired by traditional Belgian monastery beers and give it an innovative twist. This results in very own specific beers: always recognizable and at the same time surprising.

On tap at ACBF’16. Dark brown to black colour, beige head. Aroma of laurel, cardamon, dark fruits, molasses, liquorice root (more like rooibos here), some roast. Flavour is quite sweet, malty, dark fruits, laurel, cardamon, spices, like cough syrup in a way, some roast, hint of oak, bittersweet sticky finish. Medium to full bodied. Tasty.

Sampled from tap at Amsterdam Craft Beer Fest 2016. Hazy, golden amber with a white head. Sweetish, fruity aroma of mango, peach and passion fruit. Sweetish-malty, slightly fruity taste of caramel, mango, passion fruit and peach, followed by a short, slightly bitter finish. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Nice!

Batch 3. Hazy deep amber colour with an orange hue, small foamy off-white head, disappears quickly, no lacing. Smoky nose, bacon, burnt wood. Taste flat and watery, light sweet and bitter, light malt, wood. Woody and watery aftertaste, pinch of pepper, light body, watery texture, flat carbonation, not good. Gone bad?

0.33 l bottle from ’De Bierkoning’, batch 1, best before November 2016. Pitch black with a medium large, frothy, stable, light brown head. Sweetish, roasty, spicy and slightly fruity aroma of dark chocolate, lots of licorice, red berries, oak, bourbon and some vanilla. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty, moderately spicy and slightly fruity taste of dark chocolate, red berries, lots of licorice, coffee, bourbon, oak and hints of vanila, followed by a medium long, medium roasty-bitter, spicy and slightly warming finish. Medium body, slightly creamy and a little effervescent mouthfeel, soft to average carbonation. Very interesting, much going on here, a bit messy unfortunately but still quite tasty.

Bottle shared thanks to Deanso. Near black with a medium beige head. Aroma of licorice, herbs, chocolate, roast and caramel. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Way too much licorice, which I don’t like.

Bottle @ home. 7.3% written on the cap by the illustrious PotjeBier. Reddish color, small off-white head. Smell and taste malts, a slight hint of band-aid in the aroma, lightly sweetish with a light bitter finish. Decent to medium body and medium carbonation. Well it doesn’t look like a double blond to me but it tastes ok.Earlier Rating: 12/3/2015 Total Score: 2.5Bottle [thanks PotjeBier!] @ weekly tasting shared with Dutchdrebus. Hazy dark orange color, full sized foamy white head. Bad aroma of moldy, sweaty cheese. I don’t believe this, this beer tastes like a (in Dutch) "lieveheersbeestje"!!! WTF!! Unbelievable. Perhaps if you can get the lieveheersbeestje out of your thoughts you’ll get some malts, paint, overripe fermenting red fruit and something weird. It’s not really filthy, but I couldn’t drink this liquid lieveheersbeestje. It fucked up my brain.
