Bottle. I note that Robert Murray died of [ahem] idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis since I had Black Lung IX. Black with a dense tan head that sits around a cm. Lots of peated and whisky aromas with heavy roast, iodine and other seaweed sort of things, mocha. Oily texture with low carbonation. Much sweeter than I guessed with chocolate brioche, blackberries then light vanillaish oaky whisky notes as well as the peat. Lots of peat but it's never biting. Big but no overt booze. Up there with the best of the series.

From a 650ml bottle on 8/6/2021 (shared by Desmond with thanks). Pours a very deep brown with a biggish tan head. The nose is smokey, peaty - more than a bit of Lagavulin about it - with a good dash of chocolate. Tastes of sweet and dark chocolate and brown sugar up front, then moves into the smoke and peat, with a slightly sharp almost tangy bitterness. Has an amazingly strong peaty aftertaste. The mouthfeel is syrupy, the carbonation moderate. Huge yet harmonious, and full of character. Really impressive.

Pours gold with a large quickly fading head.Nose shows cucumber and coriander, little else.Flavours include more cucumber, a bit of chilli heat, a fair bit of coriander. A refreshing acidity rounds thing out.

Pours hazy pale, small head.Nose shows vanilla, spicy hops, marshmallow, toffee.Flavours include vanilla, ice cream, malt-o-milk biscuits, spicy and earthy hops.

330ml can shared with BlackHaddock down there. Pours a murky pinkish muddy gold, thin off-white head. Soft fruity plummy suggestions on the nose. Not massively sour, some fleshy plum, stone, quite dry and thin on taste overall. Below average for the style.

Bottle. Deep red brown with a beige head that fades to a dense coat. Aroma of dried fruit, whisky, butterscotch, vanilla. Full bodied but not really heavy for the ABV, certainly not syrupy. Low carbonation. Fairly sweet with lots of vanilla, layers of toffee and butterscotch, gentle spices, whisky. The bitterness is subtle but enough to lift the sweetness away. Oak eases into the finish right at the end. Warming but no overt alcohol. That delicate touch with the hops makes it for me. If I had another I would not wait until next winter.

9th May 2021. The Great World Awakening tasting with Minutmat, assisted by Grumbo (who supplied 8 of the beers). We had 14 beers from 13 different countries as we tried to add some new countries to improve our stats. 330ml can between us; BB 4th May 2022. Poured a Murky, dull old gold colour, white head on top. I expected it to be more 'plummy' and more 'sour' given the name and blurb on the can. I was actually happy to discover it wasn't overpowering in pluminess or sourness.

A beer to remember Game of Thrones? I thought that tits-out-for- exposition guff had been expunged from cultural memory by an ending thought a shart to worry Engadine seismologists. I feel out of touch. Can. Black with a tan head that fades to a 1/2 cm and then is at the rim. Aroma has lots of chocolate and vanilla, some roast and brioche. Silky and sweet with chilli that only threatens to make its presence felt and is really only a distraction from the nice chocolate and vanilla. It's not all that sweet with roast and gentle bitterness doing enough to keep it in check. Perhaps after a while the chilli plays a part at the end. Another good Moon Dog biggish stout.

From a 330 ml can on 13/4/2021 (shared with Butz). Pours a very deep brown (almost black) with a smallish head. Has a light chocolate and burnt caramel nose. Flavour follows suit with lots of dark chocolate and caramel, along with some biscuity notes. Finishes with a light roasty bitterness. The mouthfeel is a touch syrupy with average carbonation. A rather pleasant, medium sweet milk stout. Better than the quite modest ratings so far suggest.

Can. Clear red, head goes immediately. 3- Aroma of berries, laundry funk, crackers. Tart and a bit lacto slippery with the tartness just more prominent at the end than the berries. But the berries themselves don’t really pop. Still, refreshing enough.
