Description
History goes back to 1442 but it is first mentioned as a 'Brauhaus' in 1487. In the following centuries, ownership and names changed many times till 1933 when the brewery was acquired by brewer Ferdinand Wirtz and his son Cornelius Wirtz. Since then the brewhouse is owned by the Wirtz family. The brewery was destroyed during the war but afterwards the 'Brauhaus' continued its activities though the beer was brewed under contract elsewhere.

Poured up on tap at the Schreckenskammer pub. Pours clear gold with white head and leaving spotty lacing behind in a straight sided 0.2l glass. The modest aroma is up front grainy malts and then giving way to soft spicy and floral hops. I get a faint sweet citrus like note too. The taste is similar with a modest level of spicy and floral hops. To midway I get earthy hops and grainy malts joining in.

From barrel at the gaststätte
Blond color, with the usual fluffy head of Kölsch. Body, mouthfeel, aroma, flavor... it’s a light beer, evident in all components; the bitterness is quite low. No flaws, no unpleasant flavors of corn, but indeed very simple.

50cl bottle from Bierzwerg. Poured clear golden with a white head. BB 05/2011. Very grassy and hay aroma, some cardboard also. Flavor is malt and hay. Dry, slightly bitter finish. Overall a nice kölsch, aroma was a bit off though.

Bottled (BZ, BB 10/2010)
Golden color, decent white head. Papery nose with light citrus and iron. Light to medium body. Light citrusy hoppyness and sweet pale maltyness. Light lingering lemon fruityness in the aftertaste. Clean, but boring Kölsch. Another one which is probably much better from fresh tap.

Draught at the Brewpub. Dryish, slight cardboard flavor. Medium rich malt, decent hops, a bit fruity. Not super distinctive, but all right. One of the least impressive Kolsches I had in Cologne.

Bottled (from bierzwerg.de). Golden colour, mediumsized off-white head. Aroma is bready malts, some earth, herbs and mild notes of grass as well. Flavour is earth, saltwater, bready malts and some herbal notes as well. Quite pleasant. Underlying dryness between the mouth and throat from this one.

On tap at the brewpub in Köln. Clear golden with a small white head disappeared quickly. Sweet malty aroma with some fruits. Light body, and quite light but clean taste. Some bitterness in the aftertaste. Ok to the food but not that interesting.
